    News

The Development Ministry is to launch intensive market inspections to prevent increases in prices of products in high everyday demand aimed to protect consumers. Inspections started on products disturbed by companies in the same group. Development undersecretary G. Blahos said that in the case of three companies their request for increase in prices was not grounded. A well known tool to increase prices and hide profits are transactions among companies in the same group.

Development Minister K. Hatzidakis announced the electronic Observatory of Prices where consumers could be briefed on the prices of 160 products or 2000 codes from July while it will include 80.000 codes till the end of the year.

In its first stage the Observatory will cover Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Larissa and Heraklio and will eventually extend to cover all regions in the country.

[02] Turkey Must Comply with EU Agreement

Course of immigration policy was the subject of talks on Monday between Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos and the President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias. Mr. Pavlopoulos said that Turkey must sign EU-Turkey agreement for re-admission of illegal immigrants as a precondition for its EU orientation course.

Mr. Pavlopoulos said that the signing of the European agreement on immigration and asylum places emphasis on legal immigration and combat of illegal immigration. Greece-Turkey readmission of illegal immigrants agreement has taken European dimension and Turkey has realized that its European orientation depends on the role it will play to prevent immigrant and refugee waves from crossing into Europe.

âWe support Turkey's European orientation, however, Turkey should make steps forward and not Greece and the EU steps backwardâ stressed Mr. Pavlopoulos.
