  • [01] 5.7 Magnitude Tremor Hits China

    News

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake that hit China's southwestern Yunnan province late on Thursday left one person dead and 328 injured, the local authorities said. At least 30 people are in critical condition, while more than 10,000 houses were flattened. The U.S. Geological Survey said it struck in a depth of 10 kilometres. At least eight aftershocks followed the main tremor.

About 300 troops have been deployed in the area to help the rescue crews, while authorities have already sent 4500 tents to house the homeless.

[02] G8 Leaders Will Meet Again in September

The G8 leaders agreed to come together again in September in Pittsburgh as part of a larger G20 summit, leaving L'Aquila with vague declarations on the financial crisis, trade and climate change.

With regard to actions for the protection of the environment, booming giants China an India stood up and refused to consent to harsher measures regarding emission cuts.

US President Barack Obama, on the other hand, hoped that the controversies on climate change could be eased.

But the decisions to cut emissions of heat-trapping gases 80% by 2050 may exist in name only, due to the unwillingness of the developed nations to join the campaign and the lack of short-term targets.

The climate worries of the world leaders were reduced to the new Ducati vehicle with zero emissions that was used for their transfers in L'Aquila.

China, India, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa also attended the talks of the world's eight richest nations.

Host leader Silvio Berlusconi gave to his guests books with the work of Italian sculptor Antonio Canova, and Brazilian President Lula da Silva gave the uniforms of the Brazilian national football team.

In the meantime, the first ladies toured the quake-hit town of L'Aquila, while Carla Bruni and George Clooney attended the opening ceremony of a cinema built for the quake-hit residents of L'Aquila.
