  • [01] Measures on Economy and Illegal Immigration

The EU leaders decided on measures to cement EU economy and the operation of inspection mechanisms. The European Council underlined its commitment to health fiscal conditions under the Stability Pact, further noting that future developments remain uncertain. The leaders of the 27-nation bloc also highlighted the need to step up measures against illegal immigration.

The EU leaders decided to take urgent and effective preventive measures and combat illegal immigration at the EU's south sea borders. They also agreed to adopt a stiff European response and reallocate responsibilities.

With regard to economy, they claimed that the financial turmoil remains extremely serious and therefore they gave thumbs up for the creation of new monitoring bodies.

[02] Home Loans to 3-Child Families

    News

The Greek Finance Minister gave Friday thumbs up for three-child families to get home loans with favourable conditions by the Deposits and Loans Fund (TPD). The above decision is part of the Fund's social role and manifests the government's crystal clear intentions to give its backing to families with three children.

Financial Minister Giannis Papathanasiou commented: âWe remain committed to our policy on three-child families and we are putting it into action in every possible manner. The decision in question enables thousands of three-child families to get benefited from favourable conditions governing the lending of families with many children and offers them the chance to get their own house.â

    [05] EU Leaders Support Barroso

European Union leaders Thursday voiced support for European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso to lead the bloc's executive arm for another five years. This endorsement increases the likelihood that Barroso will remain at the helm of the commission. Socialist Party leaders, however, said they support Barroso's candidacy. A group lead by a French member of the European Parliament, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, has criticized Barroso's leadership.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicholas Sarkozy already have said they support a second term for Barroso. The U.K. and Italy also support him.

The European Union agreed the basis of its financial contribution to a global climate change deal on Thursday, but environmentalists said more was needed to ensure success at global talks in Copenhagen in December.

Funding to help developing nations cope with climate change is seen as the key to winning their support in fighting a problem which they say was caused by rich, industrialised states.

EU finance experts say poor countries will by 2020 need about 100 billion euros ($140 billion) each year to cut carbon dioxide emissions, and a further 20-50 billion euros to cope with the impact on the climate.
