    Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis departed Thursday morning for Brussels to attend the two-day EU Summit. The EU leaders are expected to back EU Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso for a second term and touch on the financial turmoil, climate change and illegal immigration. Karamanlis will also attend the sitting if the European Party on Friday. PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement) President George Papandreou is also due in Brussels today to participate in the sitting of the European Socialist Party.

    EU Sets to Give Backing for Barroso

    The leaders of the 27-nation bloc are expected to give their backing to EU Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso for a second term, since the position that calls for stability amidst a financial storm is the prevalent one.

    Barroso is believed to earn the bloc's backing despite the heavy criticism he has come for by France and other nations for the Commission's slow response to the financial crisis.

    The EU Summit will also give Ireland the guarantees it wants to push through the Lisbon Treaty. Ireland fears that the Treaty might pose a threat to its neutral stance, its tax regime and the legal framework concerning abortions. The above guarantees will give with a legally binding decision.

    Finally, the EU leaders will reflect on plans for stricter measures on the financial sector, despite Britain's reservations.

    [02] Barack Obama's Popularity Goes Down

    US President Barack Obama's honeymoon period has probably finished, since two new surveys suggested that the Americans are gravely concern over his policy. An NBC News and Wall Street Journal poll showed that the US President's popularity went down from 61% in April to 56%. Furthermore, the majority of the respondents (58%) want more changes capable of trimming the deficit, even if it may take longer for the recovery of the US economy.

    Seven in Ten Wary of His Interventions in Economy

    Almost 70% of those surveyed said they were concerned over the federal government's intervention in economy, healthcare and social security and Obama's rescue of General Motors.

    The poll found that just 37%t of Americans thought Obama had taken on too many issues, while 60% said he was fighting on many fronts because the country faced many pressing problems.

    In the meantime, the Republicans' popularity has received a heavy blow, since only 28% of the people gave them a positive rating.

    Both polls demonstrated the majority's opposition to Obama's decision to shut down the Guantanamo detention centre for suspected terroris
