Reactions from the government camp were strong, while Karatzaferis made it clear Thursday that his invitation related to the period after the elections.The wrangling between the government and LAOS went on through NET radio station. Speaking on NET 105.8, LAOS President said that as soon as elections are called, those who are honest within ND should join his party to be elected. The Conservatives, on the other hand, speak of a huge distance separating the two parties. Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos said that the government has made it clear that coalition is out of the question because there is a great gap between the two. News item: 23477 [02] Greece Says not to Smoking on 1 JulyThe Greek Health Minister unveiled Thursday the anti-smoking measures expected to take effect as of 1 July. Dimitris Avramopoulos said that smoking areas in bars, coffee shops and restaurants will be reduced to 30% of their total space. Special ventilation filters as well as a separate entrance are also necessary.Shop owners who wish to include a smoking area should make sure they get a special permit from the municipality they belong to by 1 July. There will be a smoking ban in all public and private services, where there are no special smoking areas, while minors will not be allowed access to smoking areas. News item: 23476 [03] G. Papandreou on Illegal Immigration & ElectionsAddressing PASOK's Political Council, Socialist leader George Papandreou termed illegal immigration as a major problem. Papandreou blasted the government for shifting its attention to the problem due to communicative reasons and for lacking a specific policy. Papandreou stressed that a serious immigration policy is required, capable of dealing with the problem, restoring the sense of security among the citizens and making the legal ones part of the Greek society.Papandreou touched on the stepped taken during the Socialist rule in Greece and slammed the government for having left the country's border unguarded and failing to implement the bilateral treaties signed. He further claimed that the issue requires serious efforts and not the cultivation of fear within the Greek society. The PASOK President is likely to make a statement on the matter. In the meantime, Papandreou assessed the outcome of the recent European elections, arguing that PASOK's victory gives the party the lead for an independent government after the general elections. George Papandreou termed snap elections as necessary, underlining that the ruling party of ND is after petty gains, following its defeat. He also reiterated that, being overwhelmed by the whirl of its own problems, the government is unable to receive the message of the elections and turn it into a policy shift. He then went on to advise his party officials to remain vigilant and promote the party's positions and programmes. âNever before has the main opposition party put on the table so many specific proposals,â stressed Papandreou, further pointing out that PASOK's goal is to unite the citizens ahead of the big changes the country needs. News item: 23473 [04] Unemployment Slightly Up in MarchNewsUnemployment in Greece slightly increased in March, standing at 9.2%, as opposed to 9% scored a year ago, the figures released by the National Statistical Service have suggested. Compared to February, about 6000 people were added on the list of the unemployed, with the total number of the unemployed amounting to 457,024. News item: 23470 [05] PASOK Political Council is Convening TodayPASOK political council is convening today in the party's headquarters in Ippokratous St. under the presidency of its leader Giorgos Papandreou in order to discuss the result of recent European elections. Papandreou hosted a dinner yesterday in a local tavern on Pefki to celebrate the electoral victory and discussed with members of his party about the co ordination of PASOK work in Euro Parliament. According to the directions given by Papandreou the division of work involves all 22 Euro election participants and not only the eight members that were elected. Papandreou briefed them that they will convene frequently in Brussels and Strasburg while their headquarters will be located in Athens in a new building that will house all competent services responsible for PASOK foreign policies and affairs with Socialist International.PASOK competent member on financial issues Louka Kateslis and Nikos Sifounakis responsible for transport and communication issues criticized the government on its decision to cut off 5% of OTE state shares.
