  • [01] Suicide Bomb Hit in Afghanistan

    News

A suicide bomber rammed his car into a police station near Afghanistan's border with Pakistan on Thursday, wounding four civilians. In the meantime, the French Prime Minister Bernard Kouchner is in Kabul for a three-day visit to hold talks with the Afghani President and check on the preparations ahead of the August presidential elections.

Violence in Afghanistan has reached its peak after the US-led NATO forces ousted the Taleban fighters in 2001, despite the increasing number of foreign troopers in the country.

[02] Public Sector Employees Take to the Streets

Joining the 24-hour nationwide strike called by the Civil Servants Supreme Administrative Council (ADEDY), public sector employees are taking to the streets on Thursday, demanding wage raises, the financing of the Solidarity Fund and the public sector employees' fund, as well as permanent working status in the public sector. Employees in ministries, pension funds, tax offices are taking place in the 24-hour strike. Hospitals and EKAV will be run by the bare minimum number of employees, while there will be no flights between 10am and 2pm due to the work stoppage of the air traffic control staff.

Train services will be seriously disrupted, since the OSE employees will too join the strike.

Strikers are to be gathered in central Athens at 1100 hours and then march towards the building housing the Parliament and the Finance Ministry.

[03] Low Turnout in Students' Elections

Voter turnout in the university elections held Wednesday was rather poor. The pre-election period failed to attract students' interest, while the key challenge for yet another year remains the issuing of common results by the students' parties. According to the initial results, DAP-NDFK, the ruling party's affiliate, has landed first place.

As per the results released by the students' parties, DAP-NDFK reported slight losses. PASP, the group affiliated with the Socialists (PASOK) posted a 2.5% rise. The parties representing the Left seem to have neither lost nor gained more.

In the meantime, hooded rioters stormed the Athens Polytechnic School shortly before midnight, igniting incidents. Three people were rushed to hospital.

A female student was injured in the Agrinio University, while clashes were also reported in the northern Greek cities of Arta and Naoussa.

[04] Time to Pick Their Nominees

    Written by Μπέτυ Σαβούρδου

Both the ruling Conservatives (ND) and the Socialists (PASOK) are contemplating on their nominees for the 7 June EU elections. The central committee of the governing party is holding a meeting at 17.30 this afternoon, with Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis appearing unwilling to reveal the person to head his party's ballot. Apart from the Prime Minister, the Ministers of Interior, Foreign Affairs, National Defence and Public Works, as well as the party's secretary, are taking part in the meeting. PASOK is expected to release its nominees on Sunday, upon George Papandreou return from China.
