[02] Pope Visits Jerusalem Holy Sites

Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday, his second day in Jerusalem, visited Muslim and Jewish holy sites in Jerusalem's Old City. At the Western Wall and the compound known to Jews as the Temple Mount, he followed Jewish tradition and placed a note into one of the ancient crevices. Earlier, Benedict was the first Pope who entered the mosque at the Dome of the Rock, in the Mosque Square where he met with the grand mufti, the Palestinians' most senior Muslim cleric.

Jerusalem Mufti Muhammad Hussein called on Benedict XVI to play an active role for the end of Israeli attack against Palestinians. "Peace and security in the region could only be consolidated with the end of Israeli occupation and restoration of Palestinians' freedom and rights' said the grand Mufti" reading the text of his letter which he next handed to the Pope. "We look forward to Your Holiness to play an active role for an end to Israeli aggression against our people, our land and our holy sites in Jerusalem, Gaza and the West Bank", he said.
