  • [01] Evgenios Spatharis Passes Away

    News

Shadow Theatre Evgenios Spatharis passed away late Saturday at the age of 85. He has been hospitalized at KAT after suffering a fatal fall during an event.

Spatharis was born in Kifisia in 1924 and followed his father's steps on the humourous adventures of Karagiozis, a wretched hunch-backed Greek, who tries to make his way through life in the Ottoman Empire.

After his studies, he began painting and dealing with Shadow Theatre. He began giving performances during the German occupation at theatres in Athens, at Embassies, Genadios Library etc. Since then, he gave numerous performances in Greece and abroad, participating in international festivals and conferences on Shadow Theatre.

He was member of the Artistic Chamber of Greece of the Institute of World Theatre (Unesco). He toured many countries and participated in several painting exhibitions in Athens, Zurich, Paris and New York.

He had been awarded with medals and in 1991 his Shadow Theatre Museum of Amarousion Municipality was established. It has been operating systematically since 1996 and trying to promote Shadow Theatre.

In February 2007, the Culture Ministry honored Evgenios Spatharis for his contribution to Art and Greek folkore tradition.

    [02] Puzzlement after Verelis' Resignation

PASOK (Socialists) appears puzzled following Mr Christos Verelis' surprise resignation as MP on Friday, one month before June's European Elections. His resignation has affected PASOK and the general political system. Mr Verelis connected his decision with the effort made to implicate his name in ILPAP's contracts with German company MAN, which is presently being investigated by the German and Greek Justice. The former PASOK MP told MEGA TV station Friday evening that the political system would benefit from his resignation.

PASOK was surprised with Mr Verelis' decision to resign that followed the Prosecutor's urgent decision to investigate whether secret money had been channeled by MAN to Greece from 2000-2002, when Mr Verelis was Transport Minister.

"I resigned because I wished to prove that there is another way in politics and that there are politicians who cannot tolerate to be humiliated," said Mr Verelis to Real News newspaper.

He also added that as the political system reminded him a marsh, he had been trying for long to find a solution, he told Eleftherotypia newspaper. He also told Eleftheros Typos newspaper that his decision proved that he would not accept the downgrading of the politics.

Mr Verelis resigned on Friday before the Speaker of Parliament Dimitris Sioufas and then briefed Mr George Papandreou and E. Venizelos.
