[01] Brazil-Argentina Confirm First Cases

Agriculture Development Minister and competent sectors have reassured that pork is absolutely safe to eat in Greece while the WHO has lifted its warning underlining that consumption of pork and pork products is safe. In the meantime, Brazil and Argentina joined the growing list of countries that have confirmed infections of H1N1 within their borders raising the number of confirmed cases to 2.100 in 25 countries and 46 deaths from the disease of which 44 in Mexico and 2 in the US. Brazilian Health Minister Jose Gomez Temporao confirmed first four cases of swine flu who contracted the flu outside the country as they had travelled to Mexico and the US. The four young adults infected are doing well said the Minister.

Of the people infected in Brasil, two were reported in Sao Paolo, 1 in Rio de Janeiro and one in Minas Gerais. The flu is under control, there is no human-to human transmission in Brazil, all H1N1 cases contracted the flu abroad, stressed Temporao. Argentina also confirmed its first case, a person who had returned to Argentina on April, 25 after a trip to Mexico and presented signs of the flu. Argentina's Health Minister Garciela Ocana said that the person infected is well and is not receiving hospital treatment. According to Argentina authorities 52 potent H1N1 cases have been reported. Among measures to fight against the flu, Argentina has issued a 10- day ban on flights from Mexico.

[02] Karamanlis Intervention in Prague Summit

The Prime-minister underlined that energy security is among the top challenges of our era and regardless of the extent of its importance from state to state there is a common view and consent among Europeans. As demand for natural gas is not expected to drop in the next years, cited Mr. Karamanlis, there should be promotion of investments in infrastructure for diversification of sources. Within this frame existing network should be extended and upgraded including the corridor delivering Ukrainian natural gas.

Mr. Karamanlis also stressed the importance for the development of regional electricity market, saying that this is the reason why Greece supports the drawing up of a regional Action Plan on Energy Infrustructure. He also said that Greece is examining the construction of a second station of liquefied gas in the Aegean coasts, underlining that similar stations should be developed in other European countries. Concluding, Mr, Karamanlis stressed that the importance of EU strategy about Eastern partnership lies on the potent of this strategy to strengthen regional stability of good neighbourly relations and economic development of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belorussia,Georgia and Ukraine.
