  • [01] PASOK: Positive Climate in Papandreou-Simitis Meeting

PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement) cadres are in support of Papandreou-Simitis rapprochement. The two men will meet on Thursday and the agenda of talks remains open. It is noteworthy that the former PM's associates said in relation to Mr Simitis' new role, the Piraeus circle is over for him.

Messrs Papandreou and Simitis will meet in Parliament for the first time after the latter was removed from the party's Parliamentary Group in June.

The meeting was set at Mr Papandreou's initiative and it will take after the off-agenda debate in Parliament on foreign policy.

Officially, the two men will talk about the economic recession and developments in Europe. However, a specific proposal may be made to the PM on his specific role in the party.

Both parties point out that it will be an interesting debate and opportunity to solve all misunderstandings.

However, Mr Simitis' associates stress in relation with the meeting that the people are not preoccupied with petty party policy but with the serious problems Greece is facing. And if asked as to whether he will return to PASOK's lists, they point out that the Piraeus circle has closed.

PASOK cadres are viewing the rapprochement positively, stressing that this abeyance should be settled. "Such abeyances should end. Strong and clear political will is demanded. First should come the citizens' goals and the solutions to Greece's problems," stressed to NET Mr Christos Papoutsis.

PASOK MP Christos Verelis spoke to NET 105.8 about a positive development expected by PASOK cadres and democrats, as Costas Simitis is a big asset for Greece and his party, adding that question is not whether he will lead the euro voting paper.

Another PASOK cadre, Nasos Alevras described Mr Simitis removal a big mistake, as it hurt the party. "Costas Simitis is an important asset for Greece. The meeting in itself is a positive development, signaling a positive situation for PASOK and Greece," stated to the state radio Giorgos Flodiris.
