Chavez Wins Vote to Eliminate Term LimitsWorld -
Vowing to stamp out crime and corruptions, problems that have tarnished their reputation, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez won a referendum to scrap term limit. Garnering 54% of the ballots in favour of the constitutional amendment that will allow him to run for re-election indefinitely, the former paratrooper commander said he would not cease being a soldier fighting for his nation's best interests.
Addressing his fans after the release of the results, he committed himself to speeding up his efforts in the financial sector and fighting the US influence on Latin America.
Chavez, who has been in power more than a decade, has grown to prominence by demonstrating his anti-USA feelings to the benefit of his country, spending money in building schools and hospitals and dispatching food supplies to people living in remote areas.
In his speech, he told his supporters that his administration would not undertake any new initiatives within 2009 due to the global credit crisis.
Accepting defeat, the opposition failed to convince voters that Chavez had been using state money to finance his campaigns.
"Today, Goliath won," said opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, who has repeatedly accused the Venezuelan President of trying to convert the country into a replica of communist Cuba.
