  • [01] New Polls Give the Socialists the Lead

    Four new surveys appeared on Sunday Press giving the Socialist Party (PASOK) a lead ranging from 3.1 to 4.6 percent. Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis is still believed to be the most appropriate for the post of the head of the government receiving 8.3 percent, as opposed to Socialist leader George Papandreou. Leading ministers put a brake on the early elections scenarios, although PASOK said that the Prime Minister confirmed his was planning to hold elections.

    A nationwide survey conducted by Focus on behalf of Real News paper gave PASOK a 3.1 percent lead over ND. In particular, PASOK garners 29.4 percent and ND receives 26.3 percent.

    As for the rest opposition parties, KKE (Greek Communist Party) lands third place with 6.6 percent, SYRIZA (Coalition of the Radical Left) trails with 6.1 percent, LAOS (Popular Orthodox Rally) gains 4.3 percent and the Greens 3.3 percent.

    As for who is the most appropriate for the post of Prime Minister, Kostas Karamanlis maintains his lead, garnering 38 percent compared to 29.7 percent for George Papandreou. A considerable 31.1 percent, however, gave a negative rating to both leaders.

    The Public Issue poll commissioned for Kathimerini paper suggested that the Socialists are 4.5 percent ahead of the Conservatives.

    In particular, PASOK gains 38.5 percent, ND trails with 34. percent, SYRIZA with 10 percent, KKE with 8.5 percent, LAOS with 4.5 percent and the Greens with 3.5 percent.

    The same poll, 39 percent of the respondent believe that Kostas Karamanlis is the most appropriate for the premiership, as opposed to 35 percent who opt for George Papandreou.

    Another survey conducted by MARC on behalf of Sunday paper Ethnos tis Kyriakis showed that PASOK is 4.3 percent ahead of the ruling party of ND. PASOK receives 34.6 percent and ND garners 30.3 percent. KKE trails with 7.3 percent, SYRIZA with 7.1 percent and LAOS with 4.1 percent.

    Most suitable for Prime Minister is Kostas Karamanlis garnering 43.3 percent, compared to George Papandreou who receives 39.2 percent.

    Finally an ALCO poll conducted for Proto Thema paper suggested that the gap between the Socialists and the Conservatives had been reduced.

    PASOK leads with 33 percent. ND follows with 28.4 percent, KKE with 7.3 percent, SYRIZA with 6.3 percent and LAOS with 4 percent.

    Asked to comments on scenarios speaking of early elections, National Defence Minister Vaggelis Meimarakis underlined that the government did not have such intentions and that the Prime Minister's orders related to the implementation of his administration's work.

    Health Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos said that general elections would take place in 2.5 years' time and predicted that ND would win them.

    "PASOK cannot impose the elections. It is up to Mr Karamanlis to take such a decision. However, it will be dictated under the burden of the situation," noted Socialist parliamentarian Evangelos Venizelos in his interview with Vima tis Kyriakis paper. He further stressed that PASOK was not playing games with the institution of the President of the Republic.

    "The surveys are an important tool depicting the current tendencies. But when they are used as a means to shape political behaviours, they stopped being credible," commented SYRIZA.
