[01] Dispute over EU Economic Forecast

EU Commission economic forecast has given rise to dispute between the government and the opposition. FinMin Yiannis Papathanasiou will make the official announcement of the government's position after his crucial meetings with EU Commissioner and the Eurogroup president ,Joaquin Almunia and Jean Claude Juncker respectively on the sidelines of the Ecofin and Eurogroup councils. However, government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros stressed that the government is handling with responsibility its obligations to the EU and with social sensitivity the problems of the low-income groups. PASOK and SYRIZA parties said that the failure of the government's economic policy was confirmed. The GCP said that EU developments indicate that there is no political management that can avert impacts of economic crisis while LAOS blame both PASOK and ND parties for leading the country to bankruptcy.

[02] âGreekâ Nutrition Protection for Premature Babies

Researchers found that a major lipid in the brain - the omega-3 fatty acid (DHA) - is not developed sufficiently in babies born before 33 weeks' gestation, leading to possible impaired mental development.

To counter this, increased doses of DHA were administered to lactating mothers with pre-term infants, in the form of tuna oil capsules. If required, infants were given supplementary formula with matching DHA levels.Of 657 premature babies tested in a trial involving five Australian hospitals, about 50% fewer infants on high-DHA diets had significantly delayed mental development compared with low DHA diets. Premature girls in particular who were exposed to DHA-rich diets showed much better mental development than girls fed the low DHA diet.

Researchers were at a loss to explain why premature male babies - who are more susceptible to cognitive problems - did not respond to the same extent, with no obvious differences in mental development between the control group and those administered high doses of DHA. A possible explanation might be that boys may have a faster metabolic rate than girls and need higher doses of DHA to make a difference, professor Gibson said.

In a multi-page proclamation sent to "To Pontiki" newspaper, the "Revolutionary Struggle" organization claims responsibility for attacks against Riot Police squad in Exarheia, where young policeman Diamantis Mantzounis was injured, Riot Police bus on December, 23, in Goudi as well as an unsuccessful bomb attack against an oil company in Faliro.

Use of violence is condemnable whatever its source is said government spokesman, Evangelos Antonaros. "There is no excuse and I will not waste any time on texts by some who want to justify the use of violence" said Mr. Antonaros.
