  • [01] Wishes for a Peaceful 2009

The New Year was ushered in with worldwide celebrations, amid the massacre taking place in the Middle East. The Athenians welcomed the New Year at Syntagma Square in central Athens, since the city's mayor, Nikitas Kaklamanis suspended the planned celebrations, voicing his concern and repulsion over the bloodshed in Gaza. The City of Athens will offer the customary New Year's meal to the homeless at the Homeless Reception Centre at 1200 hours. An hour earlier, President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias attended a Te Deum celebrated at the Athens Cathedral. He then welcomed representatives of Greece's military, religious and cultural leadership at the Presidential Mansion to wish him a Happy New Year.

The celebrations held throughout the country to welcome the New Year were really splendid. Defying the chilling cold, people stayed up till early in the morning, celebrating with lots of music, dancing and spectacular displays of fireworks.

Syntagma Square in central Athens was packed with people under the gloriously lit Christmas tree, which had been guarded, due to the recent rioting.

    Changes in Metro Services

Changes in metro services will take effect as of 1 January. They will run through 6 January. In particularly, there will be metro services every 10 minutes. The last Metro services from Syntagma station has been scheduled for 2300 hours.
