[01] Wrangling over State Budget Continues

"The international financial situation is evolving all the time. But we do not submit any budget to change the future", Evangelos Antonaros stressed.

The problem of loaning created in Greece has to do with the credibility of the government, its choices and weaknesses in management, PASOK Press representative said.

During the Press conference, SYRIZA head Alekos Alavanos said that the state budget "constitutes an insult for workers and the new generation" so SYRIZA states that it is not going to vote in favor.

As per PASOK, he underlined that "our proposals contradict the mentality of ND and PASOK. Many targets included in our agenda are not accepted by PASOK leadership. Our agenda excludes a co operation with the socialist party.

Shops will operate under new working hours during the Christmas and New Year's holidays. At the same time the market is picking up with merchants struggling to increase their turnover by dropping prices and introducing offers. Consumers have flooded the central Varvakios market, while all commodities are available. Turkeys cost five to nine euros per kilo, local lamb about seven euros per kilo, while imported lamb and pork are sold at six euros per kilo.

Although the shop owners argue that there shops were full in the weekend, they appear pessimistic as to whether they will be able to cover their losses. Shops in Glyfada, Nea Smyrni, Kallithea, the northern suburbs and Peristeri were also full.

Development Ministry employees were distributing leaflets to consumers, bearing advice on their shopping. Consumer associations also distributed leaflets outside Varvakios market.

At the same time, new working hours have been introduced to shops during holidays. They will operate from 10:00-18:00 on Sundays in Athens, while shops in Thessaloniki will close two hours later.

In Athens, on Monday and Wednesday, shops will open at 10:00 and close at 18:00, while on Saturday 20 and 27 December they will operate from 10:00-20:00. On Sunday, 21 December they will open at 10:00 and close at 18:00. On Friday, 2 January 2009, they will remain closed and on Saturday 3 January 2009 working hours will return to normal.In Thessaloniki shops will pen at 10:00 and close at 21:00 on 19, 22, 23, 29 and 30 December. On 20, 21 and 27 December will remain open from 10:00-20:00. On Christmas Eve they will remain open from 10:00 until 18:00 and on New Year's Eve from 10:00 until 16:00. Finally, shops will remain closed on 25, 26 and 28 December, as well as on 1 and 2 January.
