  • [01] Political Wrangling on Vatopedi Continues

Sparked by the Vatopedi case, the political wrangling between the government and the main opposition party continued Wednesday. Asked whether Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis did not offer his backing to some of his associates regarding the Vatopedi case, government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros said that Kostas Karamanlis made an extensive reference to the matter and that everything he claimed was crystal clear. Commenting on the parliamentary inquiry's report, he argued: "All the evidence is being examined and it will be assessed. The Prime Minister has not lost his faith in his ministers."

"Under no circumstances will we join the effort of the main opposition party [the Socialists] to exploit the case politically and penalize the country's political life." Touching on the cabinet reshuffle scenarios, Antonaros underlined: "The matter of cabinet reshuffle is up to the Prime Minister himself. He is the one that makes the decisions." Asked whether there had been a problem with Messrs Kontos and Doukas who had signed the rulings, Antonaros said that all the evidence would be examined and assessed.
