A Ryanair Boeing 737 carrying 166 passengers has made an emergency landing at Ciampino airport, Rome. None of the passengers has been injured, reported ANSA news agency.

The aircraft had taken off from Frankfurt. The captain of the aircraft decided to go ahead with an emergency landing when one of the engines malfunctioned. Airport fire official Marco Ghimenti says the jet had reported an engine problem.

Ghimenti told Sky TG-24 TV that passengers left the plane through a door and an emergency chute. He said that the landing gear appeared to give way when the jet landed at the far end of a runway.

The Italian authorities are examining the causes of the emergency landing, which took place at 09:00 Greek time, reported Italian officials.

[02] Brown: Time to Build a Global Society

The global financial crisis has given the world the unique change to create a truly global society, UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown is expected to say in his annual speech at the Lord Mayor's Banquet in London.

He argued that Britain, the USA and Europe held the key to shaping a new world order."The alliance between Britain and the U.S., and more broadly between Europe and the U.S., can and must provide leadership, not in order to make the rules ourselves, but to lead the global effort to build a stronger and more just international order."

Brown and other leaders meet in Washington next weekend to discuss longer term solutions for dealing with economic issues following a series of coordinated moves on interest rates and to recapitalise banks in the wake of the financial crisis.

"Uniquely in this global age, it is now in our power to come together so that 2008 is remembered not just for the failure of a financial crash that engulfed the world but for the resilience and optimism with which we faced the storm, endured it and prevailed."

"...And if we learn from our experience of turning unity of purpose into unity of action, we can together seize this moment of change in our world to create a truly global society."

According to a summary of the speech released by his office, Brown will set out five great challenges the world faces. These are: terrorism and extremism and the need to reassert faith in democracy; the global economy; climate change; conflict and mechanisms for rebuilding states after conflict; and meeting goals on tackling poverty and disease.

Brown will also identify five stages for tackling the economy, starting with recapitalising banks so they can resume lending to families and businesses, and better international co-ordination of fiscal and monetary policy

"My message is that we must be: internationalist not protectionist; interventionist not neutral; progressive not reactive; and forward looking not frozen by events. We can seize the moment and in doing so build a truly global society," Brown will say.

[03] Woman Recovered Dead after Building Collapses in Albania

A 63yo woman who had been reported missing along with other two people after a five-storey building collapsed Sunday in the southern Albanian town of Gjirokaster was recovered dead. The search operation is underway to locate two more people, a young mother and her 13yo daughter. Despite the pressure exerted by the families of the three missing people, the operation was halted late on Sunday.

Earlier, the local rescue workers had suspended the search operation for three hours, due to lack of necessary means and experience. They resumed efforts on Sunday evening after experts from Greece arrived in the site. The Gjirokaster-based Greek military hospital has already sent an ambulance and paramedics.

Albania's President Sali Berisha hurried to the area and asked rescue workers to do anything in their power to locate the missing ones. He also pledged and in-depth investigation into the case.

Sounding on the same wavelength, the opposition head short cut his visit to the north of the country to stand by the side of the people hit.

The collapse was apparently caused by construction works taking place near the building.
