  • [01] K. Karamanlis Speech on Europe & Economy

Prime-minister, Kostas Karamanlis delivered a speech on the subject "Where Europe Goes" at an event organized by the Konstantinos Karamanlis Democracy Institute on Thursday evening. Referring to Europe's present and future, he made proposals to deal with the financial crisis. Attending the event held at an Athens hotel was former Austria's Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel, guest of honour.

A few days prior to the G20 Summit in Washington, Mr. Karamanlis underlined the need for coordination of efforts to confine and face the economic crisis at European and global level. He spoke of protracted uncertainty and recession in Europe, underlining that emphasis should be placed on social cohesion. As the Prime-minister characteristically said the financial crisis clearly indicates what Europe must do. Europe must assume a pilot role for the establishment of strong international institutions able to coordinate interdependence of national economies in order to deal with negative impacts and boost positive prospects. Unity of forces and common actions can achieve the best results in the least time. He stressed the need for a new strategy to consolidate stability and transparency in the financial system and avert irregularities and exaggerations. Finally, the Prime-minister said: "Europe must be a pioneer in many issues of international dimension, mainly in the double energy and environment challenge, protection of environment and natural resources and global warming. In any occasion Europe should deal collectively both economic challenges and the many other world dangers. We should wonder " Where Europe Goes" and respond "What Europe we Want". The Europe I vision has a unified and strong voice in the world financial and political stage, develops a strong international presence and is more effective."
