  • [01] South-African Singer Miriam Makeba Died

South African singer and activist Miriam Makeba, also known as "Mama Africa," died Sunday of heart attack at the age of 76, after taking part in a concert near Naples on behalf of an Italian writer, Roberto Saviano, who has received death threats after writing an expose of the Italian mafia. Legendary voice of the African continent and symbol of the fight against apartheid, Miriam Makeba collapsed after her half-an-hour performance. About 1,000 people attended the concert held in a region believed to be a bastion of the Italian mafia.

"She had been the last one to go on stage, after the performances of other singers," an AFP photographer said.

She was hurried to a nearby hospital where she breathed her last, ANSA news agency said. Her agent said she had been suffering from arthritis, but he did not know if she had heart problems as well.

Born on 4 March 1930 in Johanesburg, Makeba launched her career in the '50s with the bank "Manhattan Brothers." "Pata, Pata" released in 1956 was her greatest hit ever.

She had been living in exile for many years, due her appearance in the a film against apartheid.
