  • [01] Fresh Attack against the Government

Addressing PASOK's Regional and Prefectural Committees now, party President George Papandreou is referring to the economy, the high cost of living and unemployment. PASOK Secretary Giannis Ragousis stressed that PASOK's next government, headed by George Papandreou would lead Greece out of the crisis and send a message of hope and optimism.

In parallel, he attributed PASOK's political revival to the alternative political proposal it had presented at the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair. However, despite the positive results of polls for PASOK lately, he urged the party to step up its efforts to listen to the people's problems and take initiatives at all levels.

Wrapping up the nationwide conference, Papandreou underlined that the Conservative government did not enjoy the people's trust. He then went on to argue that the government's weakness to come up with a rescue plan paralysed, further claiming that the political reversal ahead filled PASOK with responsibilities. Commenting on the developments in the bank sector, the Socialist leader blasted the government for lacking a plan and highlighted the need for a state intervention aiming at making the banks to join the plan and at the same time freeze loans for those who are in dire straits.

    [02] Monks Brawl in Jerusalem

A serious brawl broke out Sunday morning between monks from the Greek Orthodox and Armenian denominations at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in the Old City of Jerusalem. The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate accused the Armenian side of attempting to create a precedent.

Violence erupted when about 50 Armenian monks arrived early in the morning at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher to prepare for a ceremony based upon the Armenian calendar. They violently pushed back the Greek Orthodox guard from the Church's chapel and despite the talks with the Greek Orthodox priests, who vied to reinstate the guard to his post citing the ecclesiastical rules and the regime in force. The Armenians also pushed back the Greek Orthodox priests. Several of the monks, including three Greek ones, were injured, while a teen monk was allegedly attacked with a knife by an Armenian.

The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate blasted the brawl, stressing, "Four times running, the Armenians questioned the rules governing the operation of the Holy Sepulcher and tried to create a precedent, something which was averted thanks to the reaction of the Greek Orthodox priests and Police."

    [03] Papariga's Speech on Congress

Delivering a speech in an event staged in Peristeri by party cadres, KKE (Communist Party of Greece) Secretary General Aleka Papariga advised workers to reject the two big parties. She also added that the two big parties would try to now to convince the people to vote for them and persuade them that they can handle the financial crisis.

Furthermore, she argued that KKE had forecast the crisis, as well as that the ones to be affected by it would be the workers.

She also criticized the ND and PASOK parties for serving the capital, stressing that as per Social-democrat economists the crisis in Greece will last more than in other countries. Ms Papariga forecast that the 28 billion euros to be channeled to banks would result in more profits for them.

Then, she referred to the party's 18th Congress and the progress it had made, adding however that it should make progress on the sectors of work.
