At least five bombs exploded in quick succession in crowded markets and streets in the heart of Indias capital New Delhi on Saturday, killing at least 18 people and injuring scores more, police said.

The Indian Mujahideen Islamic militant group, which has claimed several major attacks in recent months, sent an email to television stations saying it was responsible for the blasts.

Police and witnesses said two went off in dustbins in and around Connaught Place, a shopping and dining area popular with tourists and locals in the centre of the city. Others exploded within minutes of each other in busy markets around the city.

"Around 6:30 p.m. we heard a very loud noise, then we saw people running all over the place," said Chanchal Kumar, a witness whose shirt was soaked with the blood of several victims who he had helped to carry into ambulances.

"There were about 100-200 people around this place," he said. The weekend was a particularly busy one ahead of Hindu and Muslim festivals.

The Indian Mujahideen email mentioned nine bombs. Police said they had found and defused three.

"So far 18 people have died," Delhi police commissioner Y.S. Dadwal told reporters.

Another went off in a dustbin near a metro station entrance on a main arterial road leading into the area, housing the offices of several foreign banks and multinational companies.

Already an international phenomenon, Joaquín Cortés: Mi Soledad has triumphantly played many of the world's capital cities since its Mexico City debut last year, including engagements in London (17 sold-out performances at the Royal Albert Hall), Venice, Milan, Paris, Tokyo, Lisbon, Lima, Madrid, Kiev, Moscow, Barcelona, Caracas and Buenos Aires and Thessaloniki. Mi Soledad (My Solitude) is a unique 90-minute fusion of flamenco dance, music and song, in which Cortés takes audiences on an intimate and provocative journey through one man's private emotions. Through the music and his unmistakable trademark zapateado, Cortés goes straight to the soul of his art, using a rich palette full of the colors of flamenco to express solitude, intimacy and the manifestation of man as an individual. Combining the musical rhythms of jazz, classical and flamenco genres with a live ten-piece orchestra and a seven-member vocal ensemble, Mi Soledad features music and lyrics by José Carbonell, Antonio Carbonell and Cortés.
