  • [01] "Crisis Is Worse within Eurozone"

The repercussions of the global economic crisis are worse for the economies of the Eurozone nations than estimated concluded the Finance Ministers of the Eurozone, following an informal Eurogroup Summit, said Greeces Finance Minister Giorgos Alogoskoufis. "It is clear that the global financial crisis and inflation have had an impact on all eurozone nations, while economic growth rates and real economies of several eurozone countries have been affected," argued Alogoskoufis.

The recent developments in economy and financial markets, as well as the introduction of the euro currency in Slovakia are running high on the agenda of Eurogrou and Ecofin councils taking place in Nice, France.

Touching on inflation, Alogoskoufis said that the European Central Bank has to keep aiming to bring inflation down, as it is still high despite a downward path. He then noted that each Eurozone nation, depending on the fiscal situation it is in and its growth rates, should undertake its own initiatives in the framework of the stability and growth pact and the Lisbon treaty. Greece has already undertaken initiatives for the 2009 budget, growth and low-income earners, and each country should undertake its own initiatives to convince the citizens of Europe there is an answer to the crisis, argued Alogoskoufis.

    [02] Medvedev's Stern Message

    12 Σεπ 2008 21:01:00

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev blasted the NATO dreams of Georgia and Ukraine, threatening that Moscow would not for a second in attacking those countries or other that may pose a threat to Russias interests.

In Georgia, President Saakashvili, meanwhile, was warned he would face "tough questions" over his handling of the crisis with Russia.

Nino Burjanadze, a two-time interim president and former speaker of parliament, called for an independent investigation into the events leading up to Georgias five-day war with Russia.

"There is a time for tough questions. Of course what happened was a Russian provocation, but we need to know whether it was possible to not yield to this provocation," she said at a news conference.

Saakashvili says he was provoked into the assault by repeated separatist attacks on Georgian-controlled villages and that Russian forces had already entered South Ossetia through the Roki Tunnel that connects it to Russian North Ossetia.

Burjanadze, a former ally of Saakashvili, also said she was planning to form a political party to challenge the government.

    [03] "Growth with Social Cohesion"

PASOK leader George Papandreou visited Friday the venue hosting the Thessaloniki International Fair and met with its board and unionists. Papandreou will deliver a speech at the Velideio conference centre on Saturday and give a customary press conference of Sunday.

"Investing in education is a national priority for us [PASOK], because growth, social cohesion and a humane society stem from education," argued the Socialist leader, who visited Thursday the 2nd Primary School of Nea Efkarpia in Thessaloniki. He wished all students, who, as he said, are Greeces wealth, and their parents and teachers a constructive academic year. Touching on education funds, Papandreou reiterated PASOKs commitment to earmark 5% of GDP for education, plus 2% for research. "It is a keynote priority, a national need and we vow," concluded Papandreou.

    [04] On HPV Vaccines

    12 Σεπ 2008 19:00:00

The two HPV vaccines that have been released in the Greek market were hailed as safe by researchers. With regard to side-effects, gynaecologists and paediatricians argued that evidence so far have proved they are the expected ones, and made it clear that they do not necessarily mean that there is no justification between the vaccine and the side effects, as the temporal coincidence could be accidental. They also claimed that the HPV vaccination is highly beneficial for women, since even though they are infected with some HPV type (it is impossible to have been infected with all four types of the virus), the vaccine will protect them from suffering a serious damage.

The above was stressed Greek gynaecologists and paediatricians in a pres conference. They also sounded the alarm, noting that eight in ten people will suffer from HPV during their sex life. "The virus causing cervical cancer to women has increased over the last years, and mind you that about 600 women in Greece are infected with cervical cancer every year, while 250 die of it," stressed the scientists.
