UN envoy, Mathew Nimitz is to meet with Greek ambassador, Adamantios Basilakis, in Thessaloniki, on Friday morning within the framework of FYROM name issue negotiations. Mr. Nimitz had separate meetings on Thursday with FYROM President and Prime-minister, Branco Crvenkovski and Nikola Gruevski respectively. In his statements, he confirmed FYROM lederships common approach to name issue, however, he refused to either confirm or belie proposal of title "North Macedonia" in several options.

[02] Killed 3 People, Injured 100

A second earthquake in two days in the same county of southwest China killed at least three people, injured more than 100 and prompted the evacuation of over 120.000, Chinese media reported on Friday. The two quakes jolted western Yunnan province, south of mountainous Sichuan where a devastating quake on May 12 killed at least 70,000 people. Todays tremor, measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale, hit Yingjiang county, bringing down houses and cutting electricity supplies throughout the region. A 5-magnitude quake hit the same county on Wednesday, forcing thousands of people to evacuate but no casualties were reported.

The price of oil is back over $120 in Asian markets today as it jumped over $5 during yesterdays session as commodity investors are highly concerned over geopolitical tension in Caucasus. In morning transactions, light crude contracts for October delivery were up 26 cents to $121.44 per barrel from $121.18 NY closing yesterday. Brent oil also picked up 29 cents to $120.45. "Commodity investors fear renewed cold war between Russia and the West" said independent analyst Elis Eklant. The White House announced yesterday that Russia-NATO military cooperation can not be resumed until crisis in Georgia is resolved.

[04] Al-Qaeda Claims Algeria Attacks

The North African wing of the al-Qaeda terror network has claimed responsibility for the recent car bombings in Algeria in which 12 people were killed and another 42 injured. The claim was made on Thursday through an audio recording by a member of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb called Salah Abu Mohammad. The group, known until last year as Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, claimed responsibility for the two car bomb blasts on Thursday in the town of Bouira, 90km southeast of the capital Algiers. The group has also claimed several earlier attacks including the twin suicide bombings of United Nations offices and a court building in the Algerian capital in December, 2007. The Bouira bombings followed a spate of attacks including Tuesdays bombing that killed 48 people, and ambushes on Sunday that killed 11. The urban bombings reflect new tactics first adopted in 2007 by fighters in the North African country, a key oil and gas supplier to Europe.
