Mays remaining days have high temperatures in store for us. The mercury is forecast to climb to 36 degrees Celsius across Greece, and even to 37 in some areas. Clear skies with some local cloud over the mainland are expected in the late afternoon. Winds will be west-northwesterly at speeds of 3 to 4 Beaufort in most parts and 5 to 6 Beaufort in the southeast Aegean. Temperatures will range from 12 degrees Celsius to 31 in the north, 13 to 33 elsewhere on the mainland and 15 to 28 on the islands.

[02] Emphasis on Peaceful Coexistence

The chief of Greeces armed forces general staff, Lt.-Gen. Dimitris Grapsas, referred to the possibility of a peaceful co-existence between Greece and Turkey, while meeting with his Turkish counterpart Ya&#351;r B&#252;y&#252;kanit in Ankara. The visit of the Greek military chief to the neighbouring country fuelled a row between the Government and PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement), which had requested it be postponed, due to the Turkish provocations in the Aegean and Thrace. Asked in Brussels about the oppositions reactions, the Greek Foreign Minister put them down to political expediencies, reminding that such visits are positives and emanate from the confidence-building measures Athens and Ankara have agreed on.

ERT, Greeces national Broadcaster, in the framework of its corporate social responsibility policy and on the occasion of the Environment World Day, is staging an event on 5 June at its facilities located on Mesogeion Avenue and Katehaki with a view to raising awareness over green issues and climate change. The event is entitled "ERT Everywhere even in Environment!"

Being responsible for the event, the working group for ERTs corporate social responsibility means to raise awareness among the public and develop a green conscience among the people working for the Greek national broadcaster.

The event will be based on the voluntary work of the ERT staff and will culminate with a concert with Melina Aslanidou, Rallia Christidou and Manos Pyrovolakis.

In particular, ERT employees will be handing out from 13.00 to 15.00 material on green driving and movement, a special Radiotileorasi issue dedicated on climate changes and a Green card including tips on saving energy and protecting the environment

From 17.30 and on, the ERT facilities in Katehaki will turn into an Open Green Park with the participation of several non-governmental organizations. There will also be open-air radio, television and internet studios, targeting to raise nationwide awareness on climate change and environmental protection.

These activities mean to signal ERTs participation in an EBU initiative that will culminate with a European green campaign entitled "Green On Air" in December 2009.

Be there in a green way. Dont use your cars, use the underground, instead. Or come on foot.

The rights emanating from the Greek peoples second citizenship, their European one, topped the talks held between Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis and European Ombudsman Nikiforos Diamandouros at Maximos Mansion. The European Ombudsman is on an official visit to Greece, invited by his Greek counterpart. Diamandouros also met with Socialist leader George Papandreou and SYN President Alexis Tsipras.

Being on an official visit to Greece, European Ombudsman Nikoforos Diamandouros met Monday morning with Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis at Maximos Mansion.

His goal is to brief the Greek people on the rights emanating from their second citizenship, that of the European Union.

The Greek people are entitled to specific rights that emanate from their citizenship of the European Union, stressed Diamandouros, further adding that his visit will be repeated so that it can be made clear that the EU law is an inalienable part of domestic lawful order.

Citizenship of the European Union was introduced by the Maastricht Treaty signed in 1992 and it exists alongside national citizenship and provides additional rights to nationals of European Union Member States.

The key rights are the following:

- The right of free movement and residence throughout the Union. - The right to vote and the right to stand in local and European elections in any Member State. - The right to protection by the diplomatic or consular authorities of other Member States when in a non-EU Member State. - The right to petition the European Parliament. - The right to apply to the European Ombudsman.

Diamandouros also had meetings with the presidents of PASOK and SYN.

[05] At the Niger Delta

Royal Dutch Shell confirmed Monday an attack on one of its pipelines claimed by a separatist group in the key Niger Delta and said some production had been stopped to contain an oil spill. "SPDC (Shell Petroleum Development Corporation) can confirm an attack on the Nembe Creek trunk line at Awoba," a spokesman told AFP, adding that an overflight had revealed that some oil had spilled. "We have mobilised equipment to contain a further spread of oil," the spokesman added. "We have also shut in some production to stop a further spill." The Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND), one of the principle groups behind major production cuts in the region, said earlier it had attacked a pipeline run by Royal Dutch Shell and killed 11 soldiers.
