Fifty two delegations and 24 aid organisations are attending the one-day meeting jointly organised by the United Nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Myanmar on the victims of Cyclone Nargis. Being an ASEAN member, Myanmar hopes to be given over $US10 billion. Cyclone Nargis left nearly 134,000 people dead or missing and up to 2.5 million destitute, while large areas of the stricken Irrawaddy Delta have not been reached. United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stressed that the government had agreed that immediate action should be taken so that humanitarian aid reaches the cyclone victims and aid organisations to be granted access to the devastated areas.

    China's Position

The Chinese Foreign minister told an international conference that China appreciates the UN Secretary Generals efforts, adding that it supports the UN role for Myanmar.

    Greek Aid

Meanwhile, Mercury departed from Lavrio port Saturday evening for Myanmar. It is carrying medicine, tents and foodstuffs collected by the Ministries of Defence and Health, the Greek Red Cross, non-governmental organizations, companies and individuals. A survivor has been pulled from the rubble some 11 days after being buried, according to the Chinese state television. Xiao Zhihu, an 80-year-old partially paralysed man, was trapped under a collapsed pillar of his house in Mianzhu city for 266 hours after the huge tremor hit China. He survived because his wife was able to pass food and water to him through the rubble, according to the broadcast. At the same time, the authorities appear optimistic over the final number of victims, as the PM announced on Saturday that the number of victims may reach 30,000 and the missing 30,000. As per official data to date the number of dead has reached 60,000, while the quake was the worst to hit China in the last 30 years.
