[01] Life Expectancy Goes Up

Reaching and even exceeding 100 years old is a feasible target for one out of four children born nowadays in the EU nations. The enormous strides against several diseases, as well as healthy diets, which cement the human body offering longevity and quality of live, have played an instrumental part in that. Eating habits consisting of fruit, vegetable, fish, olive oil and pulses, physical activity and a stress-free life are the keys to longevity. Preventive medicine has also contributed to the rise of the life expectancy, and the majority of the middle-aged people could make it to 85 years old and even to 100 under certain circumstances. In Greece, about 36,000 people are above 90 years old and 1716 have exceeded 100.

[02] Says Bush

A few days after the assassination attempt against Afghani President Hamid Karzai, US President George W. Bush admitted at a press conference that the enemy is resilient. Apart from accepting the difficulties encountered, Bush appeared satisfied over the steps made in the country, stressing, "I think we are making progress but there is a very resilient enemy. I will tell you now that were making progress in Afghanistan, but there is tough fighting. I am under no illusions this is not tough, I know we are dealing with a determined enemy."

[03] Tareq Aziz's Trial Adjourned

The trial of Tareq Aziz, Saddam Husseins former top aide, was adjourned for 20 May, after a brief hearing of the Iraqi High Tribunal on Tuesday evening. The presiding judge, Rauf Rashid Abdel-Rahman, said the trial was rescheduled for 20 May upon the seven defendants petition.

No sooner had the hearing started than former Iraqi Foreign Minister Tareq Aziz requested another lawyer, because his current one, who lives in Amman, cannot be constantly present at the trial due to safety reasons. Aziz will be tried for his role in the killing of 42 people in Baghdad in 1992.

It is the forth trial of former officials of Saddam Husseins regime, which was toppled in April 2003. The courts head judge, Abdel-Rahman, also presided over Husseins trial two years ago.

In an interview, Azizs son reiterated that his father is innocent, claiming that the former Iraqi Vice-President was in a mission abroad when the killings took place and that the victims families never sued him.
