[01] Policeman Died in Armed Robbery

The policeman, 39, who was seriously injured in an armed robbery shortly before 9am on Thursday in an Alpha Bank branch on 238 Mesogeion Avenue in Holargos district, Athens, succumbed to his wounds in the operating room. Working as the banks security guard, he followed the robbers outside the bank and ordered them to stop. They opened fired at him, and he fired back. Shot in his chest and abdominals, the policeman was hurried to a nearby clinic, where he died. The gunmen escaped on a motorbike. The Attica Police is investigating the case.

Oils prices held steady near $115 per barrel in Asian trading, although prices recorded a slight fall on Thursday. In Singapore, light sweet crude for delivery in May was down Thursday morning by 10 cents to $114.83 per barrel after a record close of 114.93 in New York. Brent North Sea for June delivery was up Thursday morning by 6 cents to $112.72 per barrel. Over the last days, oil prices have been hitting new record highs, due to an ongoing weakening dollar and investors interest in raw materials. A new announcement foreseen a decline in US energy reserves by 2.3 million oil barrels and 5.5 million gasoline barrels has also played its part in the oil price surge.

[03] Pope Criticises US Bishops

Pope Benedict on Wednesday acknowledged the Church had handled the pedophile priests scandal "very badly" and told U.S. bishops to bind up wounds and seek reconciliation with those who were "so seriously wronged."

For the second consecutive day, the pope said the scandal had caused "deep shame" and enormous pain as the result of priests betraying their vocation by sexually abusing minors with such "gravely immoral behavior."

After visiting the White House on Wednesday morning and praying with President George W. Bush, he dedicated a section of a speech to the bishops to the scandal that rocked the Church starting in 2002 and has forced U.S. dioceses to pay over $2 billion in damages.

"It is your God-given responsibility as pastors to bind up the wounds caused by every breach of trust, to foster healing, to promote reconciliation and to reach out with loving concern to those so seriously wronged," he said.

He said he agreed with an assessment by the head of the U.S. bishops conference that the crisis had been "sometimes very badly handled" and that only recently was "the scale and the gravity of the problem" more clearly understood.

[04] Father of Chaos Theory Passed Away

Best known for the concept of the "butterfly effect," whereby even the slightest disturbance can induce enormous consequences, Edward N. Lorenz, 90, died of cancer at his home in Massachusetts, USA, on Wednesday.

A leading meteorologist, Lorenz claimed in the 60s that small changes in a dynamic system, like the atmosphere, can induce major changes. In 1972, he unveiled a study entitled "Predictability: Does the Flap of a Butterflys Wings in Brazil Set Off a Tornado in Texas?"

Born in 1917 in Connecticut, Lorenz studied maths and meteorology in Harvard and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

In 1991, Lorenz was awarded the Kyoto Prize for basic sciences. Despite coming down with cancer, he was in a good shape two weeks prior to his death.

[05] Amid Tight Security

The Olympic Flame reached New Delhi amid tight security. Police forces have been deployed, as exiled Tibetans living in India, the worlds largest Tibetan community, are feared to try to hassle the torch relay through the Indian capital. The flame came through Delhi airport, where it was received by Suresh Kalmadi, the chief of the Indian Olympic Association. While it was driven to a hotel, where it will stay for the night, more than 20 pro-Tibetan demonstrators chanting anti-China slogans were arrested. Fearing that the chaotic scenes taken place in Europe and the USA could be repeated, India trimmed the relay route to one third of the original distance.

[06] Public Transport Disruption

Public transport in the Attica basin will be serious disrupted on Thursday, as the transport employees have called a work stoppage expressing their solidarity with two of their colleagues who were made redundant by TRAM SA.

Buses will be running from 7am to 22pm, there will be no electrical railway services from 11am to 3pm and from 9pm to the end of the shift. There will be no underground services from 11am to 3 pm and no tram services from 8am to 12pm.
