[01] On the FYROM Name Dispute

The Greek Government is weighing up on its strategy on the FYROM name issue, following the NATO Summit held in Bucharest last week. Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis is to brief Monday noon President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias on the Summits outcome, as well as on Greeces next moves. In the meantime, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Mat Bryzas imminent visit to the Greek capital is viewed as particularly important. Bryza, who is due on Thursday, has been invited to attend an ECONOMIST conference. The sooner the talks resumed the better, noted Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis. She also heralded initiatives towards FYROM, so that the feelings ignited to the neighbouring people after Greece vetoed their accession bid could be contained. The USA may make suggestions and exert pressure, however, it cannot give orders, Bakoyannis argued.

At the same time, the FYROM leaders are ready to embark on intense talks with a view to settling the problem the soonest possible. Therefore, the issue is to be discussed at a meeting of the countrys political leaders, as well as at a Parliament sitting. "We have to re-determine our strategy, avoiding hasty and emotional decisions that would jeopardise the countrys NATO prospect," underlined FYROM President Branko Crvenkovski.

[02] 25 People Suffered Acute Poisoning

A strong blast rocked Sunday GALENIKA, a pesticide plant located on the outskirts of Belgrade. A toxic cloud was released in the air and the citys authorities urged the people living in the area to shut their windows and stay indoors. As per police sources, 18 employees, five firefighters and two policemen were hurried to hospital after developing acute poisoning symptoms.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will hold a meeting in Jerusalem on Monday, after their revived peace talks had been suspended by the bloody Israeli offensive in Gaza. The last meeting between the two leaders dates back to 10 February. It was Abbas who confirmed on 31 March the resumption of the peace talks, following his meeting with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Amman.

Abbas said Sunday that he had no intention of singing a peace deal "at any cost," also adding that any deal to be brokered would be subject to a referendum.

An Israeli government source, on the other hand, underlined that Olmert was looking forward to the revival of the negotiations. The talks between the two leaders would keep focusing on the key issues of the peace talks, the same source was quoted as saying.

[04] Emergency Landing at the Athens Airport

A technical failure forced the pilot of an Easy Jet airliner with 123 passengers on board to perform an emergency landing at the Athens International Airport, "Eleftherios Venizelos." The airliner was en route from Athens to London.

Shortly after its takeoff from Eleftherios Venizelos at 23:05pm, the pilot detected a failure in one of the planes engines. He immediately contacted the control tower, requesting permission for an emergency landing.

After flying over the sea to exhaust its fuel tank, it landed at 23:39pm. Airport authorities had stepped up all necessary measures to facilitate the landing.
