Meanwhile, oil has continued breaking one record after the other reaching US$111 per barrel today, while the dollar-euro parity was fixed to 1.56 dollar per one euro. At the same time, gold prices breached 1,000 dollars for the first time.

Oil prices have risen by 15% due to the weak dollar since the beginning of the year.

Finally, a White House spokesman said that US President George Bush remains firm on his conception for a strong dollar and a healthy economy.

    Sources: ANA-MPA

Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat has met with the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Mr Talat and the UN chief met in the Senegalese capital Dakar this afternoon on the sidelines of the OIC summit.

During the meeting, Mr Talat urged the UN chief to take a new initiative on the Cyprus issue with the aim of bringing a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

Mr Talat also told Ban that a solution could be found to the problem by the end of 2008 if a new process, in which the UN would play an active role, was launched immediately.

For his part, Ban told Talat that the UN would determine its next step on the Cyprus issue at the end of a visit to be paid to the island by the UN Undersecretary General for Political Affairs Lynn Pascoe.

Meanwhile, Mr Talats meeting with the President of the Cyprus Republic Dimitris Christofias will be held on 21 March. As per Fileleftheros Cypriot newspaper, the Turkish-Cypriots will try to get rid of the 8 July agreement and propose a new procedure.
