    Feverish Negotiations

    12 Feb 2008 10:28:00

Negotiations on the FYROM name issue are intensifying in view of new proposal to be submitted by UN special envoy, Mathew Nimitz, on Tuesday. Washington, which wants to avoid any complications in NATO procedures, encourages both sides to find a mutually acceptable solution, told ERT television channel American ambassador to Greece, Daniel Speckhard. On Thursday, Greek Foreign Minister, Dora Bakoyianni is to meet in Washington with her American counterpart, Condoleezza Rice and the heads of Senate and Congress Foreign Affairs Committees. Mrs. Bakoyianni will expound Greek positions-preconditions- related to FYROMs admission to NATO alliance. The agenda of talks includes all bilateral issues as well as regional issues focusing on Kosovo.

From Malta, where she is attending the first EU Foreign Ministers Council meeting with the Arab League, Mrs. Bakoyiannis called on FYROM president to abandon "high tones and intransigent stand and respond to the challenge for substantial and sober negotiation". The crucial stage of the issue, however, did not stop FYROM president, Branko Crvenkovski from making fresh provocative statements at the Munich Informal Conference on Security, repeating that the name issue is non-negotiable for his country. A new round of negotiations between Greece-FYROM in the presence of Mathew Nimitz will take place at the end of the month.
