[02] The President of Iran Rejected Military Intervention

    12 May 2006 12:55:00 (Last updated: 12 May 2006 13:40:03)

    By Dimitris Alexopoulos

On Friday, President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad described the dispute between his country and the West as "psychological propaganda" and rejecting a military intervention in Iran. In Jakarta, Indonesia, Ahmadinejad accused the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of double standards and noted that the specific service is influenced by the US. On Thursday, the Iranian President appeared willing hold discussions with all sides so that a solution is found. Washington dismissed the event of direct contacts with Tehran and insisted that sanctions should be part of the new diplomatic European proposal.

    US Dismissed Direct Contacts

The US will not hold direct talks with the US and insisted that sanctions should be a part of a tactic combined with promises and threats, stated US Undersecretary for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns.

Moreover he pledged that the US "will not quit the diplomatic track easily," underling the need for Washington to keep a "hard edge" as the international community is aimed at the suspension of Iranian nuclear activities.

In a last attempt to deescalate the crisis, Great Britain, France and Germany supported by the US, Russia and China will reveal a package of privileges and sanctions to Iran within the next ten days, the implementation of which will depend on if Tehran chooses to cooperate or resist.

As per Burns, the package is being investigated by European and will include Moscows previous offer for the production of Iranian nuclear fuel on its turf.

In closing, Burns described the Iranian President Ahmadinejads 18-page letter to George W. Bush as a "missed opportunity" to seriously address issues at the centre of the dispute.

The proceedings of the EU-Latin America Summit Meeting and the Caribbean will culminate on Friday and end on Saturday with the signing of the Declaration of Vienna. On Friday night, the FMs agreed on the final document of the Declaration, which includes twelve main points and refers to issues such as protection of the environment, energy, education, immigration, justice, as well as a joint contribution for securing peace and human rights, combating terrorism, organised crime and narcotics.

The joint declaration foresees reinforcement of the two continents strategic unification, while the decision plan publicised by AFP noted that the Europeans acknowledge the sovereign right of countries to manage and regulate their natural resources, noting that a regime of adjustments more compatible with the European regulation should exist.

In an article published in newspaper Le Figaro, President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva estimated that the Summit Meeting constitutes "one of the last opportunities" to exit the dead end reached by the negotiations at the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Negotiations at the WTO mainly concern the agricultural funds given by the EU and on which exporting countries, such as Brazil, are reacting to.

The official proceedings started on Friday morning with a speech by President of Austria Heinz Fischer.

Fifty-eight state and governments leaders, as well as UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan are attending the Summit Meeting.

[07] In the Philippines Typhoon Chanchu Strikes

    12 May 2006 07:36:00

    By Anna Kourti

    Sources: Reuters, ANA

The passing of typhoon Chanchu in the central Philippines was catastrophic. Approximately 1,000 persons in six villages surrounding the village of Sogod, on the island of Leyte, have been cut off by the recent landslides. There are no reports of casualties. "It was very close to Agas Agas, where the landslide of 12 February took place," said governor of Southern Leyte Rosette Lerias. Sogod is situated approximately 25km from the village of Guinsaugon, which has turned into a mass grave as its residents were buried alive under tonnes of mud following weeks of rainfall. Typhoon Chanchu is striking the area with southern 130km/hour force gales, a fact which forced the authorities to evacuate seaside communities in the region of Bicol.

[09] The Looks Make a Good Daddy!

    11 May 2006 22:24:00

    Sources: ANA

Women are able to tell the men that can make great daddies to their children by just looking at their looks, the results of a new research that appeared in British journal "Proceedings of the Royal Society" indicate.

Famous Hollywood actor Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio fall under this category, argued head of the research professor Dario Maestripieri. According to his study, women pick up cues in mens faces that indicate an affinity for children to determine if they are attracted to those men for long-term relationships such as marriage. As for their short-term relationships, women go for mens facial masculinity.

The research was carried out by the Universities of California and Chicago, the USA. The head professor estimated that this research proves the evolution theory, according to which, women tend to choose men that indicate an interest in children.

The researchers tested the testosterone levels in 39 men, who were then shown a pair of pictures, one of an adult and the other of a baby, and were asked which they preferred. The researchers then took pictures of each man, asking them to display a neutral expression, and showed the pictures to 29 undergraduate women. The men women chose as being most interested in children were also the same men who had expressed the most interest in children in the photo test. On the other hand, those described as more masculine rated high on testosterone levels.
