[02] Over Iran's Nuke Programme Marathon Talks Continue

The talks of the five permanent UN Security Council members over Irans nuke programme are underway. Iran, on the other hand, reiterated that it has no intention of suspending uranium enrichment and warned that Tehran will confront the West and break its cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, in case the Security Council intervenes. In the meantime, in a drive to bridge the gap with China and Russia, the USA, France and Britain are to resume talks on the context of the new draft resolution on Monday. At the same time, the leaders of the Arab countries working alongside with the USA called on Iran to prove that its nuclear programme serves peace purposes, so that a new war in the region is averted. On his part, US President George W. Bush invited the international community not to undermine the threats the Iranian President has repeatedly uttered against Israel. Finally, Tehran dismissed the EU allegations that spoke of violations of human rights in Iran.

    EU Allegations Are Irrational

Irans foreign ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi called the EU allegations speaking of violations of human rights in Iran irrational and inept.

Executions in Iran are decided on and carried out under religious criteria and international treaties on political and human rights, Asefi was quoted as saying. It is the courts, the appellate courts and finally the countrys supreme court that give green light to executions, he further added.

On its part, the EU voiced its grave concern over the human rights in Iran, placing emphasis on the more than 10 executions allegedly occurred in Iran last month.

New multi-fatality car bomb attacks rocked Iraq. At least 21 people were killed and some 520 were wounded, when a car bomb went off near a bus station in the holy city of Karbala. The city, which lies 110km south of Baghdad, is home to two of the most important shrines for Shia Muslims. Earlier, two more car bombs went off Sunday morning in Baghdad, killing nine people and wounding 20. The first attack occurred in the citys Adhamiya district, targeting an Iraqi army patrol. The explosion killed eight civilians and wounded another 15. The second car bomb exploded in northern Baghdad killing a civilian and wounding further five. The area where the explosion occurred houses the offices of a pro-government paper, as well as a major Sunni shrine. As per the Iraqi Interior Ministry, about 42 bodies showing that they had been shot have been found over the last 24 hours.

A strong earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale jolted Sunday the city of Zarand, Iran, reported the state-run television station in Tehran. The quake occurred at 09.20am (Greek local time), yet there have not been reports of victims or damages.
