The Athenians packed Varvakios Market for the last-minute buys even on Holy Saturday. Development Ministry crews continued their inspections, while, the latecomers were rewarded, since prices were much lower. Secretary General for Consumer Affairs Thanassis Sckordas visited the market at noon and stated that those speaking of an upward spiralling of prices in Varvakios Market were proved wrong, the products hygiene was safeguarded, while profiteering phenomena were reduced. On Easter Sunday, all stores will remain closed. On Tuesday 25, they will shift back to their normal working hours. Mind you, on Easter Sunday, bakeries will stay open only to bake food.

Tens of thousands of Nepalese staged Saturday massive street protests against Nepals King, despite the latters pledge to restore democracy, demanding a new Constitution that will limit his political powers. "The royal proclamation is a sham," thousands of protesters chanted as marching Kathmandus streets. On Friday, King Gyanendra declared that he would hand power to Nepals main political parties and asked the seven-party alliance leading the democracy campaign to name the countrys new prime minister. On their part, the Opposition leaders met Saturday and officially announced the rejection of the Kings proposal, for it failed to live up to the claims of the seven-party alliance for a road map. The Maoist rebels, who have been fighting the Kings regime for 10 years, also dismissed his proposal as meaningless and declared they would keep fighting until power is handed over to the people through elections.

    Rallies on the Go

The Nepali Government issued Saturday a curfew in Kathmandu and neighbouring areas of the capital, as demonstrations go on.

The state-run radio station and television network broadcast the measure means to protect the lives and properties of the citizens and that it will span from 09.45am to 17.45pm (Greek local time).

Although the King proposed Friday the Opposition name a new prime minister, the three bigger parties of the seven that form the Opposition alliance turned down his proposal and promised to continue the demonstrations that have been going on for some 17 days and claimed several lives.

As per local radio stations, no violent clashes were reported on Saturdays street protests against the King.

Although the USA, India and the EU voiced their satisfaction about the Kings decision, many in the Nepali capital city think he should have done so at least two months earlier to leave room for negotiations.

Floods are still causing grave problems to Bulgaria and Hungary. Some 4,500 Hungarians had to flee their houses, fearing a levee SE of Budapest might be breached. During nighttime, more than 1,200 soldiers tried to support the levee erected along the Koros River, whose water level has surged above safety limits. "The danger has not been eliminated, but we are trying and we believe that we will finally put things under control," the spokesman of the Hungarian Civil Protection Authority was quoted as saying. In the meantime, in Bulgaria, the Danube surged to record levels at the Rousse port, while the city of Vidin remains secluded from the rest of the country, as the underground currents and the waters of the Archar River caused streets to subside.

The upward spiralling of oil prices goes on unhindered amidst grave concerns. In New York, oil prices stood at $75.17, the highest record ever hit since 1983. In London, Brent initially rocketed to $74.79, but it was fixed at $74.57. In the meantime, as per Irans state-run radio station, Iranian high-ranking official Ali Asgar Soltaniyeh said Saturday that his country has struck a deal on uranium enrichment with Russia and added that experts are working on the details. However, Soltaniyeh did not clarify whether the deal providing for an Iran-Russia cooperation serves as an alternative to Irans uranium enrichment. Soltaniyeh, who is in Russia, was quoted as saying that Iran will accept offers for the constructions of two nuclear plants, apart from the one already under construction with Russias assistance.
