[01] Primary Health Care at Focus Cabinet Over Health

The Health Ministry's Bill on Primary Health Care topped the Cabinet meeting, which is held at this hour chaired by Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis. The Bill provides for the establishment of city health centres that would ease off the workload at hospitals and establish family doctors.

[02] Between Russia and Ukraine Gas Agreement

The agreement signed on Wednesday between Russian company Gazprom and Ukraine Naftogaz put an end to the crisis between Russia and Ukraine over natural gas. As per the agreement, for the next five years Ukraine would pay Russia 230 dollars for each 1000 cubic metres of natural gas it would receive. The price is valid only for natural gas exports from Russia to Ukraine. However, Kyiv would be able to buy natural gas from Turkmenistan for 95 dollars per 1000 cubic metres. The agreement ensures the steady supply of Europe, even though the issue would be discussed today during the emergency meeting between the EUs Energy Ministers.

Satisfaction in the EU

Alexei Miller, president of the Russian company, said in a Press Conference after the end of talks that the deal would be valid as of 1 January 2006.

"We have reached a final agreement. It is successful for Gazprom and we are satisfied," Miller told reporters after talks with Oleksiy Ivchenko, head of Ukrainian state energy company Naftogaz.

"This agreement will ensure stable supplies to Europe," underlined Miller.

European Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs voiced his satisfaction over the natural gas deal.

The short crisis did not affect Greece, as it has little dependency on this energy source and covers its needs mainly with oil.

[03] In Indonesia Landslides Continue

At least 200 people are missing and feared dead, because of the landslide that buried over 100 houses in the overpopulated province of Central Java on Wednesday morning. Two days before, a similar disaster was reported in neighbouring East Java killing 57 people. "We have just received new information that 200 people are missing and buried under tonnes of mud. Two dead bodies and two survivors have been recovered so far," said a local authorities spokesperson. The landslide was triggered by heavy rainfalls and buried at least 104 homes at Cijeruk village in Central Java, some 360km southeast of Jakarta.

[04] Only One Recovered Alive Shock in West Virginia

Only one of the 13 miners that had been trapped since Monday morning in a Tallmansville mine, West Virginia, was found alive. On Tuesday, however, mine officials had announced 12 of the 13 mines had survived the mining accident, thus triggering celebrations among the families and inhabitants of Tallmansville, who were speaking of a miracle. The 13 miners were missing since Monday morning, after an explosion in the mine. The cause of the blast yet remains unknown.
