  • [01] Authorities in N. and S. Carolina on Alert And Now "Ophelia"

    By Annita Paschalinou

A few days after Katrina's lethal hit, a tropical storm, which evolves into a hurricane, is ready to afflict the US East Coast. With winds exceeding 130km per hour, Ophelia will hit North and South Carolina within the next hours. Earlier, its passage from Florida, where it remained for three days, did not cause significant problems, except for enormous waves at the coasts. As per the National Hurricane Centre, Ophelia has been described as a large category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale that was unlikely to strengthen significantly during the next 24 hours. However, authorities in North Carolina are concerned and the governor declared a state of emergency, while he even called an emergency meeting on Sunday.
