[01] Because of Possible Fires On Alert

Obstructed by very strong northerly winds, the Fire Service proceeds with its dangerous task facing devastating fires that have broken out in various parts of Greece over the past few days. The big fires that broke out last night in Preveza and Achaea, as well as in Lagonisi, have been placed under control. However, a new front of small scale was spotted in the area between Megara and Alepochori, where fire fighters have rushed to put it out, while fire fighting planes are flying over Attica for possible renewed outbreaks. The state mechanism is on increased alert around the country, as the Civil Protection Authority issued an announcement for possible fires in Attica, Euboea, Fthiotida, Corinthia, Boeotia, Argolida, Cyclades, Chios, Samos, Lesvos, Crete and Samothrace. Citizens are urged to avoid any activity that could cause a fire.

[02] The Customs Expansion Agreement Ankara Signed

Late on Friday night, Ankara signed the Customs Union Protocol with the EUs ten new Member-States, including Cyprus, a move which was considered vital before they could proceed with accession negotiations. At the same time, the Turkish Foreign Ministry announced that signing the protocol does not mean recognizing the Republic of Cyprus, adding that Ankaras position on the particular issue is voiced in a statement added in the protocol. According to information, the statement read that Turkey remains committed to a peaceful resolution of the Cypriot issue and continues to support the northern occupied part of the island. The Greek and Cypriot Foreign Ministries are studying Ankaras statement and their reactions are expected on Saturday noon.
