  • [01] Balance of Terror in Jerusalem

  • [01] Draconian Measures at Temple Mount Balance of Terror in Jerusalem

    10 Apr 2005 11:49:00

    By Athina Saloustrou

The situation in Jerusalem is unsettled for one more day, especially at the eastern part of the city. The scheduled march of extremist Jews, belonging to right-wind Revana group, at Temple Mount near the holy Muslim Al-Aqsa mosque and fears of a counter-demonstration by Palestinians in the area which is sacred for both sides, cannot but escalate tension. Israeli Police have deployed almost 3,000 men and applied restraining measures to maintain order and avoid any possible provocation. They decided to allow access to Temple Mount only to Muslim Israelis of Arab origin and to Palestinians of eastern Jerusalem aged at least 40, while they have banned any visit to all non-Muslims, including the Jewish parliamentarians of Kneset. They have also announced they will "prevent any challenge on Sunday, from wherever it may come from." What is more, three extremist activist Jews were arrested this morning, while thousands of Palestinians continue to assemble at Temple Mount. However, from the thousands of Jews that were supposed to gather at Temple Mount, as per the organisers, only a few Jewish protestors actually arrived. In the meantime, tension with Hamas and Jihad escalates after Israeli soldiers murdered three Palestinians on Saturday.
