    17 Mar 2005 08:28:00 (Last updated: 17 Mar 2005 12:42:07)

    By Tina Valaoura

Today GSEE (Greek General Confederation of Labour) and ADEDY (Supreme Administration of Greek Civil Servants Trade Unions) have commenced mobilizations with a 24-hour, nationwide strike and work stoppages in the private and public sector, while their list of demands includes high prices, social security, employment and the extended trading hours. Many public services, as well as DEKO, DEI, OTE, ELTA, banks, tax offices and universities will remain closed. The hospitals, medical centres and EKAV will only be dealing with emergencies. Trade employees will also be participating in the strike, while tutorial colleges and foreign language schools will remain closed. Public transport employees (buses, metro, suburban and electric railways) have called a work stoppage from 12:00 to 16:00. Olympic Airways have scheduled only one flight per destination, while there will be many changes in Aegean Airlines flights. Primary and High School teachers will be proceeding with 3-hour work stoppages. Journalists, translators and POSPERT will proceed with a two-hour stoppage from 12.30 to 14.30. Within this time, ERTonline will not be updating its website.

PAME (All Workers Militant Front) has organised a rally in Kannigos Square for 12 noon, while its members have already proceeded with the symbolic take over of the Development Ministry building in the area.

It should be noted that OSPA (Federation of Civil Aviation Authority Unions) employees are also participating in the strike. These include air traffic controllers and flights attendants, so there will be problems with air travel. Olympic Airways announced that they have scheduled only one flight per destination. Furthermore, Aegean Airlines has cancelled five flights, as employees will proceed with a 4-hour work stoppage. Find out about the changes in flights before departing from the airport.

In Thessaloniki, urban buses will not operate from 11:00 to 16:00, while workers will participate in a rally at 12:00, in front of the citys Workers Centre. Furthermore, PAME has set up a meeting point at the Eleftherios Venizelos statue.

    [02] Attack against Russian Magnate

    17 Mar 2005 11:03:00

    By Tina Valaoura

Sources: Reuters - BBC - ANA

The head of Russian power monopoly Unified Energy System (UES), Anatoly Chubais, was today the target of an assassination attempt, while he was being driven to his office in Moscow. According to Reuters, as Chubais armoured vehicle was exiting Minsk Avenue, in a suburb of the Russian capital, unknown assailants started firing automatic weapons, while at the same time they detonated a device, which exploded between his car and a vehicle of his convoy. Despite the coordinated attack, Chubais was not injured and arrived at his office safely.

    Controversial Figure

In his first statement following the attack, Chubais said he quite clearly understood who was behind the attack, but did not want to name anyone specifically.

"Everything that I have done -- in reforming the countrys power sector, and in uniting the countrys democratic parties -- I will continue doing, with twice the strength," he noted.

The 49-year-old Russian tycoon is one of the countrys best-known public figures and is a key player in reforms that are under way to liberalise the countrys power sector.

He ran former President Boris Yeltsins successful re-election campaign in 1996, surviving allegations that he ran an illegal election fund. He has served as Vice-President of the Russian Government, as well as the countrys representative in international financial bodies.

During the 90s, he was instrumental in implementing a mass controversial plan to privatise the countrys power sector, in the area of natural resources, including oil, metals and other key businesses, amassing a great fortune in the process.

He became the chairman of Russias Unified Energy System (UES) in 1998.

Two back-to-back earthquakes at 7:01 and 7:02 in the morning, measuring 4.3 and 4.4 on the Richter scale respectively, provided the residents of the islands of Samos with a rocky awakening. The epicentre was located on the southern part of the island, 259km east of Athens. There are no reports on damages yet. According to Mr Kostas Papazachos, a seismologist at the Thessaloniki Aristotelio University, the event is being monitored, but no conclusions concerning its development can be drawn just yet, as they will need to monitor the seismic activity on the island for a couple of days.

[05] Hezbollah Says "No" to Bush

    17 Mar 2005 09:23:00

    By Tina Valaoura

The secretary of Hebollah, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, officially rejected Bushs call to disarm, stressing that Hezbollah protects Lebanon. His response concerned the latest statements by the US President, according to which, the Lebanese Shia movement could prove that it is not a terrorist group by handing in its weapons and supporting the peace process in the Middle East.

During his meeting with the King of Jordan, Abdullah II, Bush stressed, "Hezbollah is on the terrorist list for a reason and remains on the terrorist list for a reason. [] I would hope that Hezbollah would prove that theyre not [terrorists] by laying down arms and not threatening peace."

The Syrian-friendly Hezbollah movement has both military and political power, as it has been electing MPs since 1992 and at the moment holds 12 seats in Parliament. It is on USAs terrorist list, charged, among other things, with attacking a US military camp in Beirut in 1983, killing 240 people.

    [06] New "Black Gold" Record

    17 Mar 2005 09:50:00

    By Tina Valaoura

Despite the fact that OPEC member-states agreed to Saudi Arabias proposal to raise daily oil output by 500,000 barrels, the price of oil continues its upward trend, reaching record levels yesterday. The price of crude oil in the New York exchange reached $ 56.50 a barrel, amid concerns regarding OPECs inability to meet demand, as well as a drop in US petrol stock levels.

However, during a Summit that commenced yesterday in Isfahan, Iran, the OPEC ministers agreed to an immediate increase of daily output to 27.5 million barrels, while they did not rule out the possibility of a similar increase between April and June.

This move is considered unusual for the organization, as well as the time of year, since demand in major countries usually drops during spring. However, economic analysts estimate that the boost in production will not bring significant changes in the market, given that OPEC already produces two million barrels over the official quota.

Increases in Greek Oil Market Prices

In the meantime, the latest Development Ministry recordings in Greece show a 1.36% increase in unleaded fuel and a 3.15% increase in heating oil.

So, on 11 March, the average price for unleaded fuel was 0.82 euros per litre, up from 0.809 on 4 March. Since the beginning of 2004, the price of unleaded fuel has increased by 12.18%.

With regard to heating oil, the average price was 0.491 euros per litre, from 0.476 on 4 March, while in Attica prices average around 0.485 euros per litre.

    [07] Timesharing in Power Consumption

    17 Mar 2005 08:00:00

    By Tina Valaoura

The Greek Regulatory Authority for Energy is proceedings with a pilot programme for the consumption of power during peak times. The new system will be principally implemented for customers in urban centres with high electricity consumption. This will become possible with the installation of new metres, which will be able to measure consumption and charge different rates throughout the day. As a result, higher prices will be charged during peak times and lower prices for the rest of the day. The new metres, with a replacement cost of 50 euros each that will probably be incorporated in the EU 3rd CSF, will have a red indicator that will illuminate during times of high consumption. As it was announced, this programme aims to deal with power wastage and has already been implemented in other European cities.

    [08] "Miracle" Became a Nightmare!

    16 Mar 2005 23:25:00

    By Stathis Petropoulos

The miracle may have not come in Newcastle, but Olympiacos did not show in any case that the trip there had the above as an aim! In Olympiacos worst performance this year, it did not make itself present in Givens goal area and suffered a defeat by 4-0. The bad picture of the "reds" was apparent from the beginning, since Olympiacos was frivolous defensively, non-existent in the centre and without a serious attack, which resulted to not showing the smallest resistance to Newcastle, who just sealed its qualification in the next round in the UEFA, with two goals by Shearer, one by Dyer and one by Bowyer.

    Tragic Start

A week before we could have been saying that Olympiacos, with nine players, fought a straight game against Newcastle, but today even though it had 11 players, the team played as if it had nine players in the pitch, and maybe even less! Disconnected and with bad choices in defense it did not mange in any point of the first half to cut Newcastle and thus the goal seemed a matter of time for the "miners." The time it took was about 17 minutes when the British team took advantage of the "reds" mistakes in the defense, and opened the score, placing the seal in the certain qualification to the next phase. The British knowing what to expect did not leave a meter of pitch to Djordjevic, and this lead to the collapse of Olympiacos. At the same time, Kaffes did not receive the passes he should have, while Maric was also impeccably blocked off by two players.

    Betrayed by Defense

If the lack of choices in the centre was not enough, Olympiacos was also betrayed by its good line, offense. The artificial offsides worked well but the side covers went for a walk In Nikopolidis area, which was filled by players, the Greek offenders cut the ball wrong and allowed second chances which resulted to Dyer making a "magical" attempt and opening the score for the home team. Earlier, in the 14 Butt had made a strong shot at the goalpost, while until the second goal, which completed the first half, Souness players had another three classic chances to double their score. In the 29 Anatolakis did not catch up with Shearer, who faced on his own with Nikopolidis, kicked the ball offside, while at the 38 in a corner shot, Shearer once again caught an excellent header but saw the ball go slightly out.

    Shipwreck in Newcastle

The shipwreck of the first half was completed in the 44, when Newcastles top players combined their powers. Dyer entered from the side in Olympiacos area and with Vallas allowing him plenty of space, turned the ball in the heart of the "reds" defense and Anatolakis in his attempt to block passed the ball onto Shearer, who scored 2-0 besides Anatolakis and Mavrogenidis desperate attempts. The hope that the second half will change towards something positive for the "reds" was lost soon. Bajevic put up Djordjevic as a secret offender and changed Castillo at the back, in a formation that did not offer anything, but Olympiacos first entrance in Givens area. In the 60 the Serb was substituted by Okkas and Olympiacos had made its first shot in the game with Kaffes, which was the biggest accomplishment since the 54 when the win became a triumph with Bowyer scoring the third goal for Newcastle.

    Olympiacos Throws in the Towel

Bajevics next substitution was Filippakos in the place of Castillo, with Okkas taking his original position, and the young midfielder taking action right in the centre of the pitch. Before he could show his tricks, Shearer with a smart ball by Jenas passed Nikopolidis, before he scored his personal second goal and the fourth and final for his team, which was 4-0. It became apparent that the defeat would crush Bajevic and his team, and the coach tried to rest his players, since he substituted Stoltidis with Taralidis. Before the final whistle, Olympiacos only attempted a shot by Okkas in the extra time, when Newcastle had given up on the match, and made Given block into a corner. This was the only good opportunity for Olympiacos in a match that is best be forgotten.

Referee: Conrad Plautz (Austria) Yellow cards: Vallas

Newcastle: Given, Carr (67 Ramage), Butt, OBrien, Hughes, Taylor, Jenas, Dyer (60 Milner), Shearer, Bowyer, Robert (60 Nzogbia).

Olympiacos: Nikopolidis, Mavrogenidis, Pantos,Vallas, Anatolakis, Stoltidis (79 Taralidis), Maric, Kaffes, Castillo, Giovanni (67 Filippakos), Djordjevic (62 Okkas).
