[01] Saudis outraged by Riyadh suicide car bombing

Saudi Arabias top cleric said today the people behind a suicide car bombing in Riyadh would "burn in hell" for killing innocent Muslims in the attack, which a militant group linked to al Qaeda said it carried out. The Islamist group, Al Haramain Brigades, said it was responsible for Wednesdays blast that destroyed a security force headquarters and vowed to carry out more bombings against government symbols.

[02] Gunman kills South African in Baghdad supermarket

A gunman killed a South African security guard in a Baghdad supermarket today in an attack that underscored the risks facing foreigners in Iraq. Kidnappers freed two Swiss nationals and a Palestinian, but several other foreign hostages remained missing.

[03] Thousands dead or injured in N.Korea rail blast

Up to 3,000 people were killed or injured when two trains loaded with fuel collided and exploded at a North Korean station today, hours after leader Kim Jong-il had passed through according to South Koreas YTN television. South Koreas Yonhap news agency, which spoke of widespread destruction, said there were thousands of casualties and some form of emergency had been declared in the area near the border with China.

[04] Papandreou-ATHOC pres. meeting

Greeces preparations for the Olympic Games was the main issue under discussion in the meeting opposition party of PASOK leader Giorgos Papandreou had with Olympic Games Organizing Committee Athens 2004 President Mrs. Yianna Angelopoulou-Daskalakis. Mr. Papandreou underlined that all those speaking about problems in the organizing of the games were proven wrong and added that Greece will organize the best and safest Olympic Games.

[05] ND central committee to examine Euro-elections, Cyprus tomorrow

The Cyprus issue and the preparations for the June 13th Euro-elections will be examined during a meeting of the New Democracy party central committee tomorrow that will be chaired by Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis.

[06] Cypriot pres. to visit Athens next week

Cypriot Republic President Tassos Papadopoulos will visit Athens next Tuesday for talks with the Greek government in order to map out a common strategy following the referenda.

[07] Russia kills UN measure encouraging Cyprus unity

Russia last night vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution backed by Britain and the United States that aimed to encourage Greek and Turkish Cypriots to back a plan to unify their island. The vote on the measure was 14-1 in the 15-nation council, but Russias sole "no" vote was enough to kill it because of its veto power as one of the U.N. bodys five permanent members along with the United States, France, Britain and China.

[08] Largest Greek Cypriot party firmly against plan

The largest Greek Cypriot political party announced today it opposed a peace plan to unite with the islands Turkish Cypriots because the United Nations had not provided guarantees it wanted on security according to the secretary-general of the AKEL communist party Dimitris Christofias.

Sunny weather is forecast in most parts of the country, with showers possible in eastern Macedonia and Thrace from early evening. Winds northerly, light to moderate, turning strong in parts of the Aegean. Temperatures in Athens will range from 8-20 C and in Thessaloniki from 8-20 C.
