[01] European Parliament devotes today's session to women

Todays European Parliament session in Strasbourg is dedicated to women, on the occasion of International Womens Day and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the womens committee in the Europarliament. The president of the committee, Anna Karamanou noted the need for a renewed intensity of activities, in order to ensure a fair distribution of the planets resources, the equality of the sexes, and sustainable development for everyone.

[02] Denktash says Greek Cypriots reject his requests for changes in UN peace plan

Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said today that Greek Cypriots had rejected all his requests for changes in a UN peace plan, underlining the slow pace of progress in more than two weeks of make-or-break talks. The 80-year-old leader, blamed by many for the collapse of negotiations a year ago, has repeatedly criticised the blueprint, drawn up by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

[03] Cypriot President optimistic about new Greek government's support

Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos is expected in Athens on Friday for talks with the countrys new leadership. Papadopoulos today expressed his conviction that Greek Cypriots will enjoy the full support of the new Greek government in their struggle for a just solution to the Cyprus dispute. Meanwhile, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said today he hoped Greece's new government would strengthen UN-backed peace talks on divided Cyprus and that he would visit Athens to seek Greek cooperation for a deal.

[04] New Greek PM faced with troubled Cyprus talks

Newly elected Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis has been thrown into the deep end of Cypriot reunification negotiations, but his election is unlikely to represent a major policy shift by Greece on the Cyprus issue. He will lead Greece in crucial negotiations with Turkey to aid the troubled reunification talks later this month, barely two weeks after sweeping to victory in yesterday's elections.

[05] Greek conservatives get off to a positive start

At the age of 48, Greece's youngest prime minister had a dream start today to the conservative "revolution" that swept the Socialists from power, with the Athens stock market rising to a two-year high and warm words from its neighbour and traditional rival, Turkey. The day after the election, all roads led to AThens, as Turkish, Olympic and Cypriot leaders swiftly lined up for visits to meet with New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis

[06] New Greek cabinet line-up tomorrow

The new Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis said today he would announce the line-up of his new cabinet at noon tomorrow. After meeting with the President of the Republic, Costis Stephanopoulos, the New Democracy leader told reporters that cabinet would be sworn in on Wednesday. "I want to underline that citizens honoured us with their vote," he said, "and we have great responsibilities. We have an obligation to meet their expectations and are starting work immediately."

A cloudy and cool day is forecast, with occasional showers and brief storms.Temperatures in Athens will range from 8 to 14 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 6 to 9 degrees.
