  • [01] 5-5 Richter quake in Kalamata

    A medium-strong earthquake, measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, was reported early this morning in the southern coastal city of Kalamata. The quake caused property damage to some homes and business premises, but there were no serious casualties. A woman suffered a heart attack and a 32-year-old man jumped from the first floor of a building, injuring his legs. Seismologists were cautious in their comments as to whether it was the main tremor.

    [02] Denktash says Greek Cypriots reject his proposals

    Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said today that Greek Cypriot leaders had rejected all the proposals he had made since UN-brokered peace talks on reuniting the island resumed last month. Greek Cypriot President TAssos Papadopoulos said Denktash's proposals were a step backwards to earlier positions. The two sides are trying to reach a deal that would allow a reunited Cyprus to join the European Union on May 1.

    [03] US envoy warns of "heavy price" for negative response to referendum

    Tonight, the American envoy for the Cyprus issue, Thomas Weston, is expected to arrive in Athens, and tomorrow, he will meet with caretaker foreign minister Tassos Yannitsis. During his visit today to Nicosia, Weston warned that whichever of the two communities on the island responds negatively to the upcoming referendum, it will bear the burden of an unbelievably heavy cost for Cyprus future.

    [04] Karamanlis says funds av ailable, but proper administration requried

    Tonight, main opposition New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis is speaking at a rally of the conservative partys supporters in Agrinio. In an interview this morning with the TV station, Antenna, Karamanlis stressed that funds to solve the everyday problems of citizens existed, but proper administration was necessary. He also promised to support families with more than 3 children.

    A cloudy and mild day is forecast, with local showers in most parts of the country, as well as storms in the northwest and in Crete.Temperatures in Athens will range from 10 to 17 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 7 to 14 degrees

    [06] Papandreou pledges support for low-income earners

    The political thermometer continues to rise, as the countrys pre-election campaign enters its final stretch. With general elections looming on March 7, the ruling Pasok partys president, George Papandreou today announced measures to support those in the low-income bracket, in an interview with the Alpha television station.
