  • [01] Palestinian suicide bomber kills 8 in Jerusalem

    A Palestinian suicide bomber killed eight people on a crowded Jerusalem bus today, on the eve of World Court hearings into a controversial barrier Israel says will ensure its security against such attacks. Police said about 60 people were wounded in the blast.

    Due to an improvement in weather conditions, domestic shipping schedules from the ports of Piraeus and Rafina are taking place as usual. This afternoon, the ferry line between Rio and Antirrio also opened to the public.

    Greek Communist Party General Secretary Aleka Papariga today paid a visit to farms in Marathon, Attica, whose crops had been ruined in the recent snowstorm. Earlier, addressing a rally in Aspropyrgos, Papariga launched a fresh attack against the Coalition of the Left, and also appealed to Pasok voters to avoid the trap of bi-party polarization

    Culture and education are the bridges that will lead us into the future, main opposition New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis said today, following a visit to the Ancient Theatre of Dionysos. He clarified that his partys aim was to break new ground in world culture, and called for the support of all creative, artistic people.

    Meanwhile, in the Sunday newspaper, To Vima tis Kyriakis, Karamanlis pledged that the conservative party would function on the basis of specific principles and rules, which would enhance the quality of democracy in the country.

    [05] Papandreou pledges to renew party

    In an interview published in the Sunday newspaper, Kyriakatiki Eleftherotypia, George Papandreou announced that new people would be appointed to government and party posts, stressing that the ruling Pasok party could not remain stagnant. He also pledged that the governments priority would be the everyday life of citizens, and gave assurances that the partys emblem and name would not be changed.

    A long-awaited live televised debate between the leaders of the Pasok and New Democracy parties George Papandreou and Costas Karamanlis, respectively has finally been set for Thursday, February 26. The subject of questions to be submitted by journalists to the two politicians was also decided including foreign affairs, the economy, development, education, employment and public administration.

    A cold and cloudy day is forecast, with rain and storms in the northern Ionian, Epirus and western Greece. Temperatures in Athens will range from 5 to 11 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 2 to 6 degrees.
