    A partly cloudy day is forecast, with some local showers and storms in western Greece.

    Temperatures in Athens will range from 14 to 19 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 10 to 15 degrees.

    [02] Athens and Nicosia ready for resumption of Cyprus talks

    At a meeting in Athens today, Prime Minister Costas Simitis and Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos, declared that both countries were ready for a resumption of talks on the Cyprus issue, based on a plan drafted by United National Secretary-General Kofi Annan. The two men reiterated their commitment to finding a just and viable solution to the long-standing dispute, within the framework of the UN.

    [03] "Renegade" Olympics security exercise underway

    Since last 10pm last night, Greek time, an exercise in aero-defence has been underway, as part of security preparations for the 2004 Athens Olympics. The mobilization took place under conditions of strict secrecy, within the context of the 'Renegade' plan

    [04] Olympic Torch relay to begin on March 25

    The Greek National Olympic Committee today announced that a ceremony marking the commencement of the Olympic Torch relay will be held on March 25, 2004, the date on which the modern Olympic Games were revived in 1896. The announcement was made at a special event, attended by the President of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge.

    [05] Oxygen masks to be made available to Metro passengers

    Some 24,000 oxygen masks will shortly be made available for passengers on the Athens Metro, for their protection, in case of fire or a toxic gas attack. The managing director of the contracting company, Attico Metro, Vassilis Economopoulos, clarified that there had been no threats or information concerning a possible terrorist attack and that the measure was merely a preventative one.

    [06] Elections to be held on first Sunday in May 2004?

    The first Sunday in May next year will be the most likely date on which the general elections will be held, Press Undersecretary Tilemahos Hitiris said today. He made the comment during a conference organized by the Institute of Audio-Visual Aids, on the subject of political advertising campaigns.

    [07] Pilot safely ejects from bomber before crash

    The pilot of an A-7 Corsair bomber jet, which crashed this morning in a non-inhabited area near the Andravida airport, in the Peloponnese, is in good health, according to Greek Air Force sources. Wing Commander Constantine Mitsopoulos successfully used his set ejection device and was able to parachute to safety before the jet crashed.

    [08] Anti-globalisation hunger strikers released from prison

    Greek authorities today ordered the release of seven imprisoned anti-globalisation protesters, until they go to trial. The seven include five pronounced by doctors as 'close to death', after hunger strike lasting nearly two months.

    [09] World Assembly of Hellenes Abroad to be held in December

    The 5th World Assembly of Hellenes Abroad will be held in Thessaloniki from December 11 to 14, Foreign Undersecretary Yannis Magriotis said today. He added that for the first time, representatives from Albania and Constantinople will be attending.
