Authorities said about 20 people were detained during the march, held to protest the belief that Washington gave vital support to the 1967-74 military dictatorship that crushed the student rebellion. Police fired dozens of tear gas canisters at the hooded rioters, who set fire to trash bins as they fled. The enormous security operation involved more than 7,000 police and riot officers. Traffic has been sealed off in the city center while there are serious traffic problems being reported on other streets throughout the city.
