    A cloudy and mild day is forecast, with rain and storms in the western and northern parts of the country.

    Temperatures in Athens will range from 17 to 23 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 14 to 19 degrees.

    [02] Efforts to settle church dispute end in deadlock

    Efforts to settle a dispute between the Church of Greece and the Orthodox Patriarchate have ended in a deadlock, after a toughly-worded announcement from the Patriarchate in Constantinople, which puts an end to negotiations. The Patriarchate calls on the bishops of the Greek church to support its rights at the emergency session of the Holy Synod, scheduled for next Tuesday.

    [03] Rio-Antirrio crossing still problematic

    Travellers are continuing to have problems with the Rio-Antirrio ferry crossing, which connects the Peloponnese to the mainland, as dock workers have decided to extend their strike until 7 o'clock on Tuesday morning, despite a court decision that rules that the strike is illegal. At the same time, they have warned that if their demands are not met, they are determined to proceed with industrial action of indefinite length.

    [04] Universities open, elementary and secondary teachers strike

    Universities nationwide will open again tomorrow, following a decision by professors to suspend their lengthy strike until December 5. The issue of September examinations will be decided separately by each faculty. In the meantime, teachers at elementary and high schools throughout the country will begin a 48-hour strike tomorrow, in support of their demands for higher pay.

    [05] Industrial unrest affects several key sectors

    Lawyers, IKA doctors, ambulance personnel and post-office bank staff all start a 48-hour strike tomorrow, while the civil servants union and state hospital doctors have announced a 24-hour walkout for next Tuesday. In addition, agricultural technicians will refrain from carrying out certain duties ' such a supervising slaughtering and the import and export of fresh produce ' for five days, beginning tomorrow.

    [06] Public sector hirings of nursing staff and part-time employees

    Speaking to NET radio today, Health Minister Costas Stefanis said more medical staff would be hired for state hospitals ' particularly nurses ' by the end of the year. Meanwhile, Labour Undersecretary Lefteris Tziolas told the same program that the employment of 25,000 people in public sector on a part-time basis would begin before Christmas.

    [07] 15 US soldiers die when helicopter shot down in Iraq

    Guerrillas shot down an American helicopter in Iraq today, killing at least 15 US soldiers and wounding 21, in the deadliest single strike on US-led forces, since they invaded Iraq to oust Saddam Hussein. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

    Israel allowed in more than 6,000 Palestinians to work today, in a tentative easing of the sweeping restrictions on movement that were publicly criticised by the army chief a few days ago.

    [09] Americans divided between Bush and Democrat challenger

    One year before the next presidential election, Americans are evenly divided between US President George W. Bush and a Democratic challenger, a new Washington Post-ABC news opinion poll showed today.
