  • [01] PM Simitis says more jobs top gov't priority

    Following today's cabinet meeting that focused on issues concerning unemployment and the creation of more job positions, PM Simitis underlined a higher employment rate is a top priority policy for the government.

    New programs for 154,000 individuals will be launched in November, while special measures will be implemented for specific population groups. A total of 25,000 part-time positions will be available in the public sector in the upcoming months and employers will be offered incentives to hire unemployed women with children.

    The government's aims to reduce unemployment to 6% by 2008 and 8% for women while, at the same time, increase employment on an annual basis by 1.5% and 2% for women.

    [02] Pasok Electoral Committee formed

    Michalis Chrisohoidis and Theodoros Pangalos will head the Pasok party's Central Electoral Committee following an announcement today by Mr. Chrisoshoidis, Pasok party secretary.

    Alexandros Papdopoulos will head the Central Committee that will compile the party's electoral program and will coordinate all work groups comprised of over 400 party members and personalities.

    According to Mr. Chrisohoidis, an open dialogue will be held for the program's compilation that will focus on maintaining Greek citizen's social and economic development.

    [03] New round of exploratory talks in Ankara

    Senior Greek and Turkish diplomats are to meet in Ankara today and tomorrow for a 17th round of exploratory talks on bilateral issues, Despite the fact that this will be the 17th round of talks, both countries are citing major differences, while opposition parties in Athens are requesting briefings on the talks outcome.

    [04] No expulsion for foreigners who have submitted documentation

    During the next few days, the Ministry of the Interior will issue a circular that foresees foreigners cannot be laid off from their employment if they have submitted the required documentation but have not yet received their residency permits. As a result, non-Greeks who can prove they have entered the legalization process will not be expelled

    [05] Seismologists reassuring after 4,7 quake in Thessaloniki

    Seismologists appeared calm today following the 4,7 Richter scale earthquake that rocked residents in Thessaloniki last night. A smaller earthquake, recording 3.5 on the Richter scale, took place at 11:05 this morning, and was considered to be an aftershock of last evening's quake.

    [06] Fires rage in S. California

    Southern California wildfires turned into an "Apocalypse Now" as a firestorm raced through the mountain resort of Lake Arrowhead destroying an estimated 250 homes in minutes and leaving officials fearing that the fiery rage would not abate today.

    [07] Explosion rocks Baghdad, kills two

    The United Nations pulled staff out of Baghdad today and international aid agencies debated whether they could continue operating in the face of a wave of suicide bomb attacks and persistent lawlessness. A U.N. spokeswoman in Geneva said foreign staff in Baghdad were leaving Iraq for talks on security, following Monday's bomb attack on the International Committee of the Red Cross which killed 12 people including two ICRC guards.

    In the meantime, an explosion shook Baghdad's old quarter late today, killing two people and triggering a large fire. Soon after, two bombs detonated in the north of the capital next to a U.S. military police patrol injuring two soldiers.

    [08] Police question Israel's Sharon in funding scandal

    Israeli police questioned Prime Minister Ariel Sharon for seven hours today over political funding scandals that could dent his widespread public support among Israelis. Police are investigating the right-wing leader and his two sons over a $1.5 million loan from a South Africa-based friend used as collateral to repay what judicial authorities found to have been illegal contributions to Sharon's campaign for election as Likud party chief in 1999.
