During his meeting with Prime Minister Costas Simitis at the center of talks will be Greek-Turkish relations, confidence building measures, the Cyprus issue and Turkey's European course.Mr. Gul will also meet with Greek President Kostis Stephanopoulos, the leader of the right-wing main opposition party Kostas Karamanlis and Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou. [03] Gul will also visit venues under construction for the Aug. 13-29 Olympics and will attend a signing ceremony of the Olympic Truce.(20/10/2003 8:30:00 μμ)[04] US State Dept. coordinator for Cyprus in Athens tomorrowThe U.S. State Department's special coordinator for the Cyprus issue, Thomas Weston arrives in Athens tomorrow, after beginning a series of contacts for the Cyprus issue in Ankara. According to sources, Mr. Weston today urged Turkey to put pressure on the Turkish Cypriots after elections due in December to help ensure the island joins the European Union next year reunited. Weston said the United States still regarded a blueprint brokered by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and rejected by Denktash as the best basis for a solution. Despite reservations, Turkey is also prepared to use the Annan plan as a basis for further negotiations. After his stop in Athens, Mr. Weston will travel to Cyprus.(20/10/2003 8:32:00 μμ) [05] PM meets with President StefanopoulosPrime Minister Costas Simitis appeared optimistic about the course of the Greek economy and the growth rates following today's meeting with Greek President Kostis Stephanopoulos.The Prime Minister stated to reporters that there is progress in the sector of the economy that will be more evident in the months to come. He also stated the EU has proceeded with the materialization of European programs aimed at strengthening the growth rates at a European level which will benefit Greece. He also condemned the government for entering into corrupt contracts and selling off state property in order to cover public debts.(20/10/2003 8:35:00 μμ) [07] Bi-Ministerial Committee meets in view of IOC visitThe Bi-Ministerial Committee met today under Prime Minister Simitis in order to examine the course of the 2004 Olympics projects in view of the upcoming visit by the International Olympics Organizing Committee.Following a meeting with the President of the Athens 2004 Olympics Organizing Committee, Gianna Angelopoulou this afternoon, the Minister of Public Works, Vaso Papandreou underlined the projects are proceeding at rapid paces and noted all would be ready within the projected time-frames. (20/10/2003 8:37:00 μμ) [08] Church battle subsides-Greeks in favor of Church,State separationThe crisis between the Church of Greece and the Orthodox Patriarchate appears to be subsiding. Ecumenichal Patriarch Vartholomaios expressed the hope that the problems with the Church of Greece would be resolved with intended goodwill and the help of God. From the part of the Church of Greece it was decided that all comments from both ends would cease with respect to the dispute.In the meantime, according to a survey published in today's 'NEA' newspaper, 57% of the voters of the two major political parties in Greece support the State-Church separation. Also, 52% called for an intervention by the State in the event there is no agreement between the Patriarch and the Archbishop, while 53% call for the intervention to be in favour of the Church of Greece and 17% in favour of the Patriarchate. (20/10/2003 8:38:00 μμ) [09] Sharon renews threat to oust Arafat; raids in GazaPrime Minister Ariel Sharon today renewed Israel's threat to "remove" Yasser Arafat, just hours after Israeli warplanes and helicopters killed two militants and a bystander in air strikes in Gaza. Sharon said in a policy speech he remained committed to a U.S.-backed Middle East "road map" and saw a real chance for progress toward a peace settlement with the Palestinians in coming months. Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat accused the right-wing prime minister of "undermining peace".(20/10/2003 8:43:00 μμ) [10] U.S. soldier, two civilians killed in Iraqi townA U.S. soldier and two civilians were killed after an American patrol was attacked in the flashpoint Iraqi town of Falluja today. A U.S. military spokeswoman said a roadside bomb exploded as the patrol was driving past. Attackers then fired assault rifles at the Americans, who returned fire.
