    [02] PM open new Igoumenitsa port, slams ND

    Speaking in Igoumenitsa today ' where he inaugurated the new port facility ' Prime Minister Costas Simitis expressed the conviction that Greece will successfully respond to the challenges of the upcoming four-year period 2004-2008. He also accused the main opposition New Democracy party of double-talk, confusion and populism.

    [03] 6,000 jobless employed for Olympic Games

    Approximately 6,000 jobless young people will be employed by the Athens 2004 organising committee for next year's Olympic Games, announced Labour Minister Dimitris Reppas and the President of the committee, Yanna Angelopoulou, today. The period of employment will range from three to 11 months.

    [04] Procedures underway for utility supplies to illegal homes

    A ministerial decision is expected next week, about documents required for some 300,000 illegal homes ' built outside city zoning ' to be connected to phones, water and power supplies. Public Works and Environment Minister Vasso Papandreou insisted today that the procedures did not involve complete legalisation, clarifying that homes not covered by the new measures would still be razed.

    [05] Gas station owners threaten strike

    Petrol station owners today reiterated their now-frequent threat to strike for an indefinite period of time, claiming that the government had reneged on a deal reached for the installation of cash registers. However, the General Secretary of the Finance Ministry, Giorgos Kanellopoulos, insisted that nothing had changed in the agreement.

    The examination period for September now seems to be up in the air once more, at the country's tertiary institutions, as university professors prepare a lengthy strike from next Monday and technical college teachers join their colleagues, extending their industrial action up to Thursday.

    Member states of the United Nations nuclear watchdog lock horns over a draft resolution, tabled by Arab states, calling on Israel to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and allow the UN to inspect its nuclear program.
