    [02] Cypriot President on 2-day visit to Athens

    This promises to be a week of developments in the Cyprus issue, with a two-day visit to Athens ' starting today ' by Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos, for talks with Prime Minister Costas Simitis. The focus of discussions will be the current situation in Cyprus, in view of its upcoming accession to the European Union in May next year, and the pending "elections" in the self-styled Turkish-Cypriot state.

    [03] Foreign Minister Papandreou in Washington for talks

    Foreign Minister George Papandreou arrived in Washington today, for a two-day visit. Apart from talks with Secretary of State Colin Powell and National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice, Papandreou will be honoured at a special ceremony, by Parliamentarians for Global Action, for his work during Greece's European Union presidency earlier this year.

    [04] Two alternative scenarios proposed on new electoral law

    Two alternative scenarios, on a proposed new electoral law, are provided for in an invitation to a dialogue, sent by the government to opposition party leaders today. The first involves proportional representation of at least 81 percent and the second of 88 percent. Interior Minister Costas Skandalidis said the government was determined that the electoral law would be passed by the present parliament.

    [05] No guns for foreign security forces at Athens Olympics

    Foreign security forces, guarding athletes at next year's Olympic Games in Athens, will be banned from carrying firearms, Public Order Minister Giorgos Floridis told Flash Radio today. He clarified that the only authorities responsible for executing the security arrangements would be Greek, adding that security was a top priority for the games.

    [06] PM chairs meeting on pay hikes for teachers

    Prime Minister Costas Simitis is chairing a crucial meeting this evening, to discuss possible pay rises for state-employed teachers, who have threatened to strike if their demands are not met. In a related development, professors at universities and technical colleges today began a 5-day strike in support of their demands for higher salaries.

    [07] Deadline today for Pasok MP's bourse transaction statements

    A deadline expires tonight for the submission by Pasok deputies of a statement revealing details of any transactions they may have had on the Athens Stock Exchange during the past few years. According to the Secretary of the party's parliamentary group, only a small number of the ruling party's MPs have not yet sent in their declarations.

    [08] Israel denies plan to kill Arafat

    Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom today dismissed comments by a cabinet minister that Israel could kill Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, but the remarks merely served to increase international pressure for caution. Meanwhile, the top UN envoy for the Middle East warned today that more bloodshed was inevitable, unless the peace plan was pushed forward more quickly

    [09] Blast near Chechnya kills 3

    A suspected suicide bomber blew up a truck outside security offices near rebel Chechna today, killing at least three people, in a new setback for Moscow's peace plan for the region. The blast occurred in the middle of campaigning for an October 5 election for Chechen president.
