    [02] Market optimistic after price freeze decision

    Optimism prevails in the market, for similar initiatives in other sectors, after a decision by three major supermarket chains ' Carrefour-Marinopoulos, Veropoulos and Elomas ' to freeze the prices of their merchandise. At the same time, consumer organisations have announced plans to stage demonstrations nationwide against the soaring costs of living.

    [03] Gap between Pasok and ND narrows by 1.7%

    The gap in voters' preferences between the ruling Pasok party and the main opposition New Democracy party has narrowed by 1.7 percent, according to a recent opinion poll conducted by the Alko company and published in the right-wing "Apoyevmatini" daily newspaper. Asked which party they would vote for in the next elections, 39.7 percent answered ND, compared to 33 percent for Pasok. However, Prime Minister Costas Simitis continues to be considered the most suitable leader for the country, with 33.9 percent.

    [04] ND leader to announce party's program in Thessaloniki

    New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis is scheduled to announce the party's program for the economy, education and health sectors, in Thessaloniki this evening, in an address at the International Trade Fair. This afternoon, the opposition leader ' who visited pavilions at the fair ' noted the inequalities in provincial regions and delays in major infrastructure projects.

    [05] Earthquake reported near Kos

    An earthquake, measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale, shook the sea region west of the island of Kos ' some 300 kms southeast of Athens ' at around five o'clock this afternoon. To date, no casualties or property damage have been reported. Seismologists have given assurances that the phenomenon is part of normal seismic activity in the region and is no cause for alarm.

    [06] Quartet seeks "empowered" Palestinian PM

    Envoys of the so-called Quartet steering the Middle East peace process agreed today on the need for a new Palestinian government, with an empowered prime minister, to break the present cycle of violence. Meanwhile, a defiant Palestinian President Yasser Arafat condemned an Israeli threat to exile him as bid to eradicate Palestinian independence, and appealed for international intervention.

    [07] Big Five move towards consensus on Iraq

    United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Anna said today consensus between the Big Five powers on the future of Iraq was "essential and achievable." Speaking alongside Annan, US Secretary of State Colin Powell said the talks had given them a basis for further discussions in New York next week.

    [08] YTN television says over 100 killed in S. Korea typhoon

    South Korea's YTN television station said today that more than 100 people had been killed when Typhoon Maemi battered southern areas of the country. The government's official tally stood at 33 killed, with another 14 mission.

    [09] Swedish euro vote in the balance after Lindh's murder

    Swedish sympathy for murdered pro-euro Foreign Minister Anna Lindh has thrown Sunday's vote on replacing the crown with the euro wide open, with one poll on the eve of the referendum pointing to a "Yes" win. In the meantime, police said they wanted to question a dark-haired man in a cap, aged about 30, who was photographed by a security camera in the store where Lindh was stabbed on Wednesday.
